Āzarbāydschān (Persian: آذربایجان) a region is in the northwest Iran and corresponds to the historical region “Āzarbāydschān” described in antique and medieval sources. It is administratively divided into:
another often used, however unofficial name for the region is south Azerbaijan (southAzerbaijani: گونياذربایجان; Güney Azäerbaycan), which is very popular particularly among Azerbaijani nationalists. The term is criticized as misleading, becausethe today's State of Azerbaijan (“north Azerbaijan”) historically regarded not to the region Āzarbāydschān belongs, but to the region Arran, and the name Azerbaijan only in 19. Century by the Russian Besatzer received. In order to avoid this term, one uses therefore also the more neutral designation Iranian Azerbaijan.
Surface and population
Āzarbāydschān strictly speaking covers today about 100,000 km ² and approximately 7 million humans, from those the predominantPart turksprachige Aserbaidschaner is. Together with the population portions of the Aseri in other provinces Iran altogether about 17 million humans of this subpopulation are added.
Āzarbāydschān is considered as one of the richest regions Iran. In it the large carpet industry of the country with the most famous liesKnüpfereien.
Spreading of the Azerbaijani group of peoples and Iran
Iran is four and one-half times large like Germany and an multi-ethnical country with different peoples. The largest minority among the 69 million Iranians, of whom more than half are only scarce Perser, thereby the Aseri Turks place, which are divided into the following linguistically with one another closely used main groups: Aserbaidschaner, Kaschkai, Afschar and some other Turkstämme in Chorasan. After the Iranian ministry of the Interior 20% of the Iranian population are Azerbaijani Turks. The actual number might lie however more highly. One estimates the numberthe Turks in Iran on over 17 million, therefore approx. 24% . Other sources call - depending upon political adjustment - also smaller or higher numbers.
The Aserbaidschaner (also Azeris, Aseris, Azaris) is a Turkvolk, which predominantly in the state Azerbaijan and inIran lives. A dialect of the Oghuz Turkish, which is spoken also in Turkey, is Azerbaijani. The Aserbaidschaner understands itself due to its language, culture, and history as ethnical Turks and calls themselves Azärbaycan Türkleri. Contrary to other Turkvölkern the Aserbaidschaner belongs to that however in predominant majorityShiite and not the Sunni faith direction on. In Iran or also in other countries they are called not Aserbaidschaner, but when designates Turks. The moreover one many Azerbaijan is well-known only under the country in the south Caucasus, however most Aserbaidschaner in Iranian Azerbaijan, in the northwest lives of theCountry in the provinces west Azerbaijan (capital Urmia), east Azerbaijan (capital Täbris) and Ardebil as well as partially also in Hamadan, Zandschan and Kazwin. Also the present of religious head of state Iran, Ayatollah Chamenei, is Aserbaidschaner.
Of Iran problem with the Azerbaijani group of peoples consists above all of it,that the speakers of the southAzerbaijani to another Turkish nationality profess themselves often: Mainly by them “door coma niche “(= turkmenische) is indicated the nationality.
That has however thereby its authorization since these groups of peoples settle by the majority in central Iran and at the borders to Turkmenistanand thus the connection with the Caucasian master country lost. The Aserbaidschaner Iran is today predominantly oghusischer origin and one goes from a number of populations of approx. 16 million humans or a portion of 24% of the Iranian total population out. Is the Afşari, the Şahsavani, the Baharlu, which Aynallu, which Nafar, which Qajar, which already contains Qaragozlu, and the Moqaddam and Pişagçi with. These races rank themselves, although they speak a modification of the Azerbaijani one, always among the group of peoples of the Turkomanen.
