Abel P. Upshur
Abel Parker Upshur (* 17. June 1790 in Northampton County, Virginia, † 28. February 1844 on the steamer USS Princeton on the Potomac River) was an US-American lawyer, politician and a minister of foreign affairs.
Upshur studied law at the University of Yale and at the University of Princeton. To its permission 1810 it went first to Baltimore, Maryland and opened then its own Kanzlei in smelling moon. Starting from this time it participated also actively in the political happening. Starting from 1812 it was member of the Virginia House OF Delegates. Its political career got national meaning, as it new president John Tyler into its cabinet took up and it at the 11. October 1841 to the naval Minister made. It coined/shaped this office by reformation and held reorganization of the navy and this office up to 23. July 1843. One day later, thus to 24. July 1843, appointed it president Tyler the minister of foreign affairs and thus the successor of Daniel Webster. This office stopped he up to his death to 28. February 1844. Its successor as ministers of foreign affairs became John C. Calhoun.
Upshur died on the steamer “USS Princeton” during a cruise on the Potomac River, when one of the cannons on board exploded. After it became and. A. the destroyer USS Abel P. Upshur (DD-193) designated, the Upshur County, west Virginia, the Upshur County, Texas, likewise the Upshur Street in the northwest of Washington D. C..
