it studied first medicine in Freiburg and in Berlin, turned however after the Physikum to chemistry and attained a doctorate 1899 with Heinrich Kiliani in Freiburg with a thesis over new contributions for the knowledge of the Digitalisstoffe. Subsequently, it went again to Berlin as a coworkerby Emil Fischer. it changed 1901 again to Freiburg, where it habilitierte itself 1904. He was private lecturer and A. o. Professor in Freiburg until 1913, then professor in Innsbruck until 1915. Afterwards it went as a successor from Otto barrier oh to Goettingen, where it held the chair for chemistry up to its retirement.

Already its 1903 Habilitationsarbeit submitted in Freiburg had the title over Cholesterin. Like that also its further research work was aligned to the chemistry of the Steroide. Itsucceeded wind from to prove the close relations between the Cholesterin and bile acids. In addition it cleared the chemical structure up of different Vitamine of the B-complex and the D-group and confirmed its results by their synthesis. In its procedure (1927) photochemically Vitamin synthesized D became under the label name Vigantol of the Pharmaunternehmen E. Merck (Darmstadt) and Bavarian (Leverkusen) market.
