Work & social justice - the choice alternative (short WASG) is a political party in Germany, which itself in the process of the yearly 2004 substantially from government-critical left SPD - had formed members and trade unionists first as association and in January 2005 as a party assembled. You do not only belong former SPD members, as since June 2005 also the former SPD chairman of the party Oskar Lafontaine, them find also support with other left and the left-alternative spectrum to individuals and groups which can be assigned (like e.g. Attac), as well as with further globalization critics. Members of the WASG began with the election to the Bundestag 2005 on the open lists of the left wing party . The party co-operates closely with the left wing party, and medium-term a union is aimed at with this.

contentwise profile

concerning the political location is trade union near and less principal friendly the party - according to own estimate - than the SPD.

a draft for bases by program is strongly affected of the memoranda working group alternative economic policy according to statement of members of the board like the political economist Axel Troost. The program aims at a stabilization of the demand and describes the conception of social justice, which considers the party worthwhile. In addition belongs the return to a tax policy, which taxes more strongly after the economic efficiency. In particular the reductions of taxes of the Red-Greens government should be introduced since 1999 for the capital income of the large corporations and high incomes retrogressive made as well as the 1997 run out wealth tax again.

In the working group alternative economic policy trade unionists cooperate. Since the majority of the German economists endorses a neoliberale and offer-oriented economic policy, an argument was for the establishment of the working group pointing other alternatives out.

relationship to socialism

although „socialism “the name of a magazine of WASG close persons is, was the WASG first a protest movement, which did not understand itself explicitly as socialistically. In the establishment phase the refusal of socialism was as an association goal a constituent moment, with which the WASG distinguished itself from the Party of Democratic Socialism. At the same time one did not want to lock however the potential of the past Party of Democratic Socialism members. The association and later the party was socialists openly, however with the objection of the Federal Administration, it should not „too many “be. Typical socialism representatives in the WASG became then however not former Party of Democratic Socialism members such as Uwe Hiksch, but above all former and active members of splinter parties and combinations such as DKP, SAV, link jerk and KBW. When after the election of the federal parliament in North Rhine-Westphalia 2005 it became clear that a Zusammengehen with the left wing party would become inevitable, began to consider the WASG their relationship to socialism. Meanwhile the WASG stands in negotiations over a durable, final fusion with the left wing party. It made their prominent representative clear that also the common new party must profess itself to democratic socialism.

history

prehistory/association WASG

the WASG developed from - within the SPD - the increasing criticism at from many members as „neoliberal “felt economic and social politics since 1998 officiating „Red-Greens “the Federal Government under Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (see. Agenda 2010 and Hartz IV).

Murat Çakır (Pressesprecher)
Murat Çakır (press speaker)

the party went out of the association choice alternative work and social justice registered association. out, to 3. July 2004 based was. In the association again the two forerunner groupings initiative work and social justice ( into mainly Bavarian union members are represented) and choice alternative ( with emphasis in north and West Germany) were come up. These had formed as reaction to from them as too neoliberal felt government politics, in particular massnahmenpaket the called agenda 2010, the Red-Greens coalition. The first meeting of the group of choice alternative found to 5. March 2004 in the citizen of Berlin house of the German trade union federation instead of.

The association had at the 1. September 2004 already 4,056, in December 2004 approx. 6,000 members. A first regional organization became to 13. July 2004 in the Saarland in the life called. A further regional organization followed in Hamburg at the 1. April 2005 after.

To 17. October 2004 held the regional organization in North Rhine-Westphalia a first state member conference, in which more than 400 that participated altogether 1,100 members in the Land of the Federal Republic and selected a 15-köpfigen regional-level party council. The state member conference already decided, despite unsettled financing to 22. May 2005 to the election of the federal parliament in North Rhine-Westphalia to begin to want (see below.).

The association WAsG registered association. existed today beside the party WASG. The further purpose of the association, which was one „a party in establishment preparation “, is still indefinite; possible is among other things a transfer into a donation in the parliamentary apron, as they have also different parties.

Mediale attention

the establishment of the WASG excited from the outset large attention.

One speculated that the establishment of a new left wing party could lead to a renewed splitting of the SPD. There were such splitting several times in the history of the social-democracy. Examples are the splitting off of the independent social-democratic party (USPD) during the First World War, at the beginning of the thirties with the socialist labour party of Germany (SAPD), which also Willy Brandt had belonged, and then, however the little successful and in the meantime for a long time dissolved democratic socialists (DS), called by the ex SPD - Members of the Bundestag Karl-Heinz Hansen and Manfred copilot spades at the beginning of the 80's in the life. In the 90's the party work for Bremen split itself off the SPD Bremen. Once the reintroduction succeeded to it into the citizenry.

Since the announcement of the common start to the election to the Bundestag 2005 of WASG members over the open lists of the Party of Democratic Socialism renamed in left wing party, this leftist coalition is noticed of the media in the meantime however rather as new political Kraft - on the left of the SPD. The operational readiness level of this new formation in all mass media is since then indeterminable. There was political Talkshow without participation of WASG leading candidate Oskar Lafontaine (North-Rhine/Westphalia) before the choice date hardly still another, Uli bricklayer (Baden-Wuerttemberg) and Klaus Ernst (Bavaria). Even the MIRROR let 35/2005 Oskar Lafontaine in a dispute begin in its expenditure against the Bavarian Prime Minister and CSU chairman Edmund Stoiber. From the choice barometer of mirror-on-line [1] the reason for the strong mediale attention could be read off daily: continuous since July 2005 the prognoses of the polling institutes expelled the leftist coalition as presumed new third-strongest Kraft in the party landscape of the German Federal Republic. After 14 days before the choice tilted the inquiries - CDU/CSU and FDP missed now the majority - began the media to discuss various coalition models. Reuters announced that the Green Christian Ströbele was as a first leading politician in principle unlocked for a co-operation with the left wing party.

Above all particulars, reproaches of minorities to the party leadership and arguments in the course of the Zusammengehens with the left wing party received mention again and again in the consequence.

an establishment of party and naming

to 20. and 21. November 2004 was decided in Nuremberg on an establishment of party. Several members of the provisional Federal Administration had already explained first to aim at and to the next election to the Bundestag to begin want such an establishment of party. The party wants to offer a choice alternative to dissatisfied voters as well as Nichtwählern as new left wing party.

After a strike ballot over the will the establishment of party in December 2004 became to 22. January 2005 in Goettingen the official establishment of party made. The party name became work & social justice - the choice alternative (abbreviation: ASG). On arrangement of the regional court Duesseldorf the party may lead its original contraction ASG not further. Had complained the ASG Bildungsforum (working group social politics and society formation). Thereupon one decided to take over the contraction WASG for the party. So that a party and association can be differentiated further, one designated the association in WAsG e. V. over. Often the party is called also choice alternative work & social justice, what however not is correct, since that is the name of the association.

party-internal conflicts

the political adjustment of the party is disputed between the members. Some would like to establish they as traditional left wing party of socialist coinage. This course is supported substantial alternative “ SAV socialist of members of the trotzkistisch aligned grouping „. Another group, above all union representative and ex-SPDler, aim at a collection movement. This is to address also to liberals and conservative ones, who consider a stabilization of socialnational structures necessary. Briefly after the establishment of party at the beginning of of 2005 escalated this controversy, however by the election of the federal parliament fight in North Rhine-Westphalia was overlaid and played no more role, than at the end of of May a premature election to the Bundestag was announced.

To it the conflict followed directly around a common choice start with the Party of Democratic Socialism.

Around „the Leverkusener “those, which rejected a fusion, collected themselves circle. Representatives of this line partly withdrew from the party and want to base with „the FSG “a new party. This step went at the end of 20 to 40 persons.

A majority decided finally for a common candidacy. For many it was the prelude to a durable fusion of both parties, while others see this fusion critical and in question to place. Linked with the “Party of Democratic Socialism question” the controversy over government participation and over special politics is close or more protest.

In Berlin dominates a group, which pursues a radical course. It leans government participation decided off, in particular the red-red coalition in Berlin. In this group above all the network is „referendum social Berlin “for the logging-off of the red-red senate, disappointed former Party of Democratic Socialism members and the SAV the Wortführer.

A third group is ready for the fusion with the left wing party, but not at any price.

The leader of the parliamentary group Oskar Lafontaine and the majority in the WASG Federal Administration around Klaus Ernst use themselves substantial for the fusion. Government participation rejects it not in principle.

crucial elections

election of the federal parliament in North Rhine-Westphalia

after the resolution, at the election of the federal parliament in North Rhine-Westphalia to 22. May 2005 to participate, placed the national delegate conference to 23. January 2005 in Duesseldorf forty candidates for the national reserve list up. All governmental districts were considered here. The Herner social minister Jürgen Klute could become generally accepted in a combat tuning against the former SPD representatives to the Bundestag Hans Wallow as a leading candidate. In the consequence it succeeded to begin the member-strongest regional organization of the WASG in all constituencies with direct candidates.

The WASG reached a voice portion of 2,2 per cent with the election of the federal parliament (approx. 182.000 voices). It jumped over thereby not the five-per cent hurdle, became however a fifth-strongest party after CDU, SPD, the Green and FDP.

election to the Bundestag fight 2005

Oskar Lafontaine (leading candidate)

after the election of the federal parliament in May 2005 announced Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder surprisingly a premature election to the Bundestag. The WASG was financially not for a so early election to the Bundestag personnel and prepared. In it also a increased number of pickling rides did not change for anything.

The former SPD head Oskar Lafontaine explained public-effectively his readiness for a point candidacy with the election to the Bundestag if the WASG with the Party of Democratic Socialism together begins. After the guidance of the WASG took up promising negotiations with the Party of Democratic Socialism, Lafontaine of the WASG stepped to 18. June 2005. On the same day he was selected in Cologne on the point place of the WASG proposal list in North-Rhine/Westphalia, with which he was certain at the same time as a leading candidate to the election to the Bundestag. With the announcement Lafontaines began a wave of pickling rides in Party of Democratic Socialism and WASG, under it also prominent SPD members.

After Peter von Oertzen, already to 18. March 2005 the party member shank changed, stepped to 27. June 2005 with state parliament delegates of Baden-Wuerttemberg the Ulrich bricklayer a further political representative from the SPD from and at the 1. July 2005 into the WASG. He noticed its federal state parliament mandate further. Bricklayer was thereby the first state parliament delegates of the WASG.

For a common start of two parties the right to vote does not plan a solution.

In the discussion were different models. A Listenverbindung favored first excludes the right to vote clearly. Another suggestion was, the Party of Democratic Socialism is only in the east to begin, the WASG only in the west. This suggestion had several disadvantages: Both parties would have had to achieve enough being correct in their region, in order country widely the 5% - hurdle to jump over. This would have about 7% in the west for the WASG, for which left wing party meant about 24-28 in the Osten%. Unclear was also, who stands as a candidate in Berlin. Only the Party of Democratic Socialism could hope if necessary for the basic mandate clause, after which an introduction into the Bundestag also with the failure to the 5% - hurdle is possible. It had already used this rule 1994. Besides the WASG in the individual Lands of the Federal Republic signatures would have had to collect.

Finally one agreed on the fact that the Party of Democratic Socialism should begin country widely and WASG members and non-party ones could hope on promising list places for the introduction into the Bundestag. 1994 and 1998 the Party of Democratic Socialism these so-called “open lists” already used.

The Party of Democratic Socialism designated itself before into the left wing party. over and began in 10 of the 16 Lands of the Federal Republic with the additive Party of Democratic Socialism as the left wing party Party of Democratic Socialism to the choice, in the others than the left wing party. Critics assumed that it would be difficult in the Lands of the Federal Republic concerned to inspire voters for the choice of the left wing party, disappointed by the Party of Democratic Socialism.

The Party Congress of the WASG at the 3. July 2005 in Kassel decided to introduce over the question of co-operation the elections to the Bundestag preferred by WASG and Party of Democratic Socialism under the new name „left wing party “with 2005 a strike ballot.

Questions and results:

  • „You are for the candidacy of members of the WASG on the open lists ‚of the left wing party `to the election to the Bundestag 2005? “ : 81%
  • „are you for the introduction of an result-open discussion process with the goal of creating a broad democratic leftist coalition? This process is led including all levels of our party. On the result on a Party Congress and in a further strike ballot one decides. “ : 85%

the Federal Party Congress of the Party of Democratic Socialism to 17. July gave likewise the agreement to renaming in left wing party and candidacy of WASG candidates on the national lists. However she reserved the possibility of being allowed to lead the past party contraction Party of Democratic Socialism as additive of individual regional organizations (thus „the left Party of Democratic Socialism “).

During the list list in Bavaria it came to disputes. WASG representative accused the Party of Democratic Socialism of, after two WASG members were not selected on promising places of their national list. The two members had been nominated with an WASG internal Vorabstimmung.

Taz the headline, the WASG made was swallowed by the Party of Democratic Socialism „“. The disputes were settled in the following week.

There were doubts with some conservative lawyers and constitutionalists that the national lists of the left wing party were not legal, but the national returning officers confirmed the validity of the lists. That the CDU intimate constitutionalists Professor. Dr. Wolfgang Löwer inserted however election petition against those its opinion after inadmissible „masked list combination “.

To 19. Left wing party party chief Lothar Bisky and WASG member of the board Klaus Ernst announced August 2005 to convert the project of a common united left wing party faster than for the time being planned. Must, before so Klaus Ernst, which become WASG however only in the west a strong party. At the beginning of of September 2005 had the WASG over 10500 members. The moreover one signatory both a five-lateral co-operation agreement. After the choice working groups from WASG and left wing party Party of Democratic Socialism are to compile a common party program for the future. The name „left wing party “is not to change thereby any longer. In addition it was agreed upon that the parties are not to begin with the coming elections of the federal parliament against each other. On basis of this agreement the left wing party Rhineland-Palatinate withdrew from its candidacy to the election of the federal parliament 2006. Also in Baden-Wuerttemberg as well as with the local elections in Hessen the parties agreed on common candidacies. Only isolates and with small success began separately in some municipalities WASG and left wing party there.

The citizen of Berlin regional organization of the WASG had announced to begin with the elections of the federal parliament against the left wing party Party of Democratic Socialism. This became on a state convention to 26. and 27. November 2005 decided.

choice to the Lower House in Berlin

The neutrality of this article or paragraph is disputed. The reasons stand on the discussion side or on the side for neutrality problems. Attempts to formulate the article neutral and remove this component only if it is no longer necessary.

In the citizen of Berlin regional organization is the common candidacy with the left wing party for the choice of the Lower House to 17. September 2006 disputed, since the left wing party in the eyes of the regional-level party council supports one into the citizens of Berlin governmentneoliberale “policy. A member tuning at the beginning of March 2006 resulted in that only one knappe supports majority of the co-ordinating members its own candidacy. Due to the small election turnout many voices rated invalidly of 68,7% and only 272 admitted themselves of the 860 WASG members to this candidacy form at the end. The Federal Administration sees itself therefore confirmed in the view that it will not give an independent candidacy, while the regional-level party council submitted a participation announcement with the national returning officer. The SAV attained - employee Lucy Redler large mediale attention at short notice, when she communicated the choice participation desired. Lucy Redler is leading candidate of the WASG Berlin.

The relationship between WASG Berlin and left wing party Berlin was considered already before as wrecked.

election of the federal parliament in Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Wuerttemberg

the WASG took at the elections of the federal parliament in Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Wuerttemberg to 26. March 2006 part. On its lists also members of the left wing party began.

However there were breakdowns in particular in Rhineland-Palatinate during the list list, then the national returning officer painted all list places from 8 to 40, so that the national list of the WASG covers only seven candidates.

According to present conditions the WASG/Linke in Baden-Wuerttemberg reached 3.1% of the delivered voices and missed thereby the introduction into the federal state parliament. The WASG became however a fifth-strongest party in the country. In some constituencies such as Mannheim or Freiburg in mash gau could crack the WASG the 5%-Hürde however. After the provisional results the WASG obtained its highest voice portions with 6,9% in Mannheim I, and Freiburg in mash gau the II as well as with 5,5% in Pforzheim. Most badly they fared with 2,1% in Schorndorf, Backnang and Balingen as well as with 1,8% in Rottweil and joy city .

Bad cutting of the SPD off in Baden-Wuerttemberg is to be due partly also to the success of the WASG, which probably away-snatched the SPD some voters. Primarily however the number of the Nichtwähler did not increase the WASG debited to the SPD (and other parties), could from it (so far) a large profit draw. In the comparison of the constituencies the results of the SPD and the WASG correlate positively, if also not very pronouncedly. That means tendentious, where the SPD was strong, was also the WASG rather stronger. Something similar was to be determined with the election of the federal parliament in North-Rhine/Westphalia.

In Rhineland-Palatinate the WASG/Linke 2.5% of the voices achieved and thereby likewise fifth-strongest Kraft in the country

substantial better results with likewise the local elections in Hessen, taking place at the 26.März 2006 , was obtained. There WASG members began mostly on lists of voter combinations with designation like the LINKE.WASG .

relationship to the left wing party Party of Democratic Socialism

during a majority of the WASG members in an alliance with the left wing party the unique chance saw to draw into the Bundestag with the goal of an all-German combination political linking a minority to seize feared around the Leverkusener circle that the left wing party Party of Democratic Socialism will only use the WASG for it, in order in the west foot. Isolated it gives also combination critic in the left wing party Party of Democratic Socialism.

The two leaders of the parliamentary group divide dererlei doubts however obviously not and already explained with their appearances in the election to the Bundestag fight 2005 the historical chance as the education of a common, politically effective Kraft to the left of the SPD.

The left wing party received and is 2005 8.7% of the votes with the election to the Bundestag with 54 delegates in the 16. German Bundestag drawn in. After the left wing party Party of Democratic Socialism on its Federal Party Congress had decided the possibility of double memberships between WASG and left wing party, prominent representatives of both parties occurred different party those in each case. Prominent examples are Gregor Gysi and Oskar Lafontaine as well as the citizen of Berlin national managing director of the left wing party Carsten treasure. In particular because of the existing tensions between the citizen of Berlin regional organizations it came to objections against some double memberships to forbid in other regional organizations was against the articles tried, to double members the entrance to party meetings. The arbitral tribunal of the WASG explained meanwhile discriminations for ineffective and illegitimately.

In a strike ballot, whose result admitted at the beginning of of April '06 was given, approximately 78% of the co-ordinations (45% of the members) for a fusion with the left wing party Party of Democratic Socialism were valid. Critics of the fusion process referred to the relatively small election turnout, which was with 57%.

infiltration attempts of right-wing extremists

in the summer 2005 called parts of the NPD, in particular the personal adviser of the party chief Udo Voigt and neo-Nazi cadres of many years Thomas „Steiner “Wulff, to infiltrate the WASG since it into the immigrant worker - expressions of WASG leading politician Oskar Lafontaine, which demanded the protection of German jobs from cheaper competition from the foreign country in this connection, would see „national goals “. In some regional organizations isolate neo-Nazis discovered, partly were already introduced party expulsion procedures. Those are however individual cases, which occurred so far only very rarely.

apron organizations and wing

apron organizations are either such groups, which can receive money ( for instance donations or local-political combinations) for the political will formation from the state or the one party maintains, in order to embody itself in certain environments. In the broader sense in addition also wing organizations apply as for instance the Marxist forum of the left wing party Party of Democratic Socialism.

youth federation

the WASG does not possess an own youth federation on federal level. It recognized the left wing partynear youth federation ['solvently] in Thuringia, Saxonia-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein, Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Wuerttemberg and Brandenburg as its youth federation. In Bavaria, North-Rhine/Westphalia and Bremen exists party-own youth AGen, which cooperates however with ['solvently]. In Lower Saxony cooperates the WASG with ['solvently] so far without formal resolution. In Baden-Wuerttemberg ['solvently] „the left youth added itself the secondary name “, in order to document the opening to WASG members. Meanwhile the majority [ 'solvently] - of the members is in Schleswig-Holstein WASG member.

local-political combination

the WASG possesses momentarily no kommunalpolitsche combination. Where the WASG has own mandates, the local-political forums of the left wing party Party of Democratic Socialism are partly along-used.

restaurant economics

the WASG has momentarily no own restaurant association. The association OWUS is recognized by it. It has its roots in the east of the republic and is close traditionally to the left wing party.

donation/education association

the WASG has so far no recognized party near donation. WASG members arose so far in the surrounding field of the magazine socialism . Some WASG members have active work relations with the Luxembourg donationdonation Luxembourg donation of the left wing party. Others united in the WASG close education association SALT. Long time was considered, the WASG registered association. to use for the establishment of an own party donation. Whether this is still current in view of the forthcoming fusion with the left wing party Party of Democratic Socialism, is doubtful.

Leverkusener circle

within the WASG was based to 10. June 2005 the community of interests of the Leverkusener of circle. This used itself for its own candidacy of the WASG with the elections to the Bundestag. Demand for core of the Leverkusener of circle was to be achieved at that time a strike ballot among the members, in which the question was asked whether the WASG on open lists of the Party of Democratic Socialism was to stand as a candidate, or not. Since that time the Leverkusener circle (LVK) worries about different inquiries of members or local's groups. The Leverkusener circle leans the leftist coalition among other things with the reason off, the Party of Democratic Socialism is only the follow-up party of the SED. In addition many members of the circle state, the WASG is only one invention of the Party of Democratic Socialism, in order to make the Party of Democratic Socialism more popular in the west. There is not a proof for this statement however.

Therefore the Leverkusener circle in an open letter to the regional-level party council of the WASG placed some demands on the regional-level party council of the WASG. If the desires of the grouping are not converted, then also a new establishment of party is not excluded. A party expulsion procedure was threatened to several members of the Leverkusener of circle, whose behavior is classified by the Federal Administration member Murat Cakir as „party-damaging “. The regional-level party council North-Rhine/Westphalia decided three expulsion procedures. Since at the beginning of of 2006 the Leverkusener circle has hardly more perceptible meaning in the WASG.

IKTB

already at association times gave it a similar grouping within the WASG: The Initiativkreis for transparency and basis democracy (IKTB), based of some WASG members in „the Altenberger yard “in Cologne. A avowed goal was the employment for basis-democratic decisions over procedure and goals of the WASG and an absolute transparency of decision making. Both at least partly missed the participants in the WASG. The grouping held itself however only few months and fell apart again. Some members withdrew from the WASG and/or. did not take part in the step from the association to the party, which required a new entry, - others created the Leverkusener circle then later. At present a part of this group is about to create its own party under the name „peace and social justice “(FSG) while the other part of the grouping around the Leverkusener circle than association tries to use itself - outside of the federal politics - than association „Leverkusener circle registered association “for the social interests of the citizens.
