Arvid August Afzelius

Arvid August Afzelius

Arvid August Afzelius (* 6. May 1785 in Hornborga, † 25. September 1871 in Enköping) was the first collecting tank of Swedish Volkslieder.

Afzelius worked from 1828 to its death as a minister in Enköping. Together with Eric Gustaf Geijer it gave 1814 - 1818 the first printed collection of Swedish Volkslieder with melodies under the title “Svenska folk visor från forntiden” in three volumes out. The musical treatment of the melodies took place via the musical director of the University of Uppsala, Friedrich Haeffner.

The fundamental work energized to further collections of Volksliedern and inspired many composers of Sweden.
