general

with the AUDI V8 tried to establish AUDI in automobiles the upper class.

Because of missed model politics this succeeded to the AUDI A8 however only with the successor of the AUDI V8. The AUDI V8 stayed far behind the prognosticated sales figures.

But there were several reasons. On the one hand the similarity was not to be ignored to the “smaller” models 100/200, although it concerned technically a large reconstruction, on the other hand after the presentation of the AUDI V8 the successor of the AUDI 100, on which it was based, was already briefly introduced (1990).

In addition the V8 was offered first only with very high-quality equipment, which contained leather seats, climatic mechanism , automatic transmission and many other equipment details. Thus it was approximately 30% more expensively than comparable basis models of the S-class of Mercedes or BMW 7er row of BMW.

The 1988 still missing image of the mark AUDI, particularly in the upper class segment, played surely also a large role. Thus many buyers from the target group desired were not ready spending substantially more moneys on a car with less image value than for example a Mercedes S-class or a BMW of the 7er row offered it. A certain starting advantage was however that the V8 was all-wheel-driven, as only vehicle of the upper class offered at that time. A disadvantage again was that customers, who did not want to use an all-wheel drive could not away-opt it however also.

engine

the AUDI V8 was offered at first exclusively with an eight-cylinder engine with 32 valves and four obenliegenden cam shafts. A selective knocking sensor technology and a Motronic served the motor control.

The engine was manufactured completely from aluminum, had a capacity of 3,6 litres and carried 184 KW out /250 HP.

Starting from model year 1992 alternatively a further eight-cylinder was offered to engine with a capacity by 4,2 litres and an achievement by 206kW/280PS.

body

the body was, as galvanizes at that time with AUDI usually, fully.

It was based on the series of the AUDI 100/200 type 44, was however fundamentally changed. Within the front range all parts were and much more besides again designed including the headlight , hood , bumper , fender.

The fenders were issued, in order to be able to take up the broader track width. The rear doors as well as the rear bumper were changed likewise, in order to be able to be adapted to the issued fenders. The tail lamps were completely red dyed in at the time at that time new procedures, while for example the turn signals lit up still orange.

Apart from the basic version AUDI the V8 offered extended version also in one around 30cm. However less than 300 vehicles were produced of this long version.

As Avant, as combination the AUDI V8 was not thus offered. In the autocity wolf castle is however an AUDI V8 Avant issued as Unikat.

transmission/drive

the AUDI V8 was the first vehicle, which was offered with a permanent all-wheel drive and automatic transmission. Beside the automatic transmission also the all wheel system worked quattro perfectly automatically.

The engine strength was distributed automatically on in each case the wheels, which had most road grip, without the driver had to be made manual interferences as for example connecting differential locks. But a hydraulic multiple disk clutch to the central differential as well as a gate EN differential ensured.

In the normal enterprise the engine strength was transferred in the relationship 50:50 to front and rear axle. With different roadway conditions the Kraftverteilung up to a relationship of 20:80 and/or 80:20 changed. The Kraftverteilung took place likewise in the relationship left vehicle side/right vehicle side.

Due to special customer's requests 1991 also a 5-Gang transmission for the AUDI V8 were offered, which to model year 1992 were replaced with the introduction of the 4.2l-Motors by a 6-Gang transmission. The largest part of the customers ordered however further the automatic transmission, why vehicles with transmission are to be found extremely rare today.

the road performances depended on the combination on engine and transmission.

other

defiance of many mechanical and electronic innovations applies the AUDI V8 until today than very reliable. In lasting reports of various automagazines over 100.000 km the vehicle fared at that time usually with small lack and without losses above average well.

It must be considered however that resulting repairs led and still lead immense costs with itself due to the small built number of items. The present Fahrzeugbestand in Germany is with far under 5.000 pieces. According to the spare parts, whose prices move the partly far upper class level usual above, are rare and expensively.

Briefly after the presentation of the AUDI V8 many technical periodicals reprimanded the high spare part prices. Beginning of the 1990er years cost a new engine to 20,000, - DM (the price new VOLKSWAGEN gulf), an automatic transmission 15,000, - DM and even for the front brake disks became inclusive brake linings 1,500, - DM requires.

Probably also for this reason today most remaining copies of the V8 are in lover or collecting tank hands. Copies in bad preservation condition are still attractive offer, used usually however as spare part donors.
