Augusts Beernaert
Augusts Marie François Beernaert (* 26. July 1829 in east end, † 6. October 1912 in Luzern) was a Belgian lawyer and politician. As a member of the international arbitral tribunal into the Hague as well as its employment in the solution of international controversies he received the Nobel peace prize to 1909.

early years
Augusts Beernaert was born 1829 as a son of a financial official. After its education it studied jurisprudence at the university in lions and put there 1850 down its graduation . Financed by journey a scholarship it visited the universities of Berlin, Paris, Heidelberg, Leipzig and Strasbourg afterwards for two years and returned 1853 to its homeland. There he became a successful lawyer.

only 1873 began the political career for Beernaert with an appointment into the Belgian government. 1884 he became a head of the government and Minister of Finance of its country and concentrated his work particularly on an improvement of the sea routes, among other things with the establishment of the “Belgian association for the standardization of the maritime law” as well as the “international maritime committee”. A further emphasis was on the development of the Belgian capital Brussels. It took an important role in the Belgian denomination controversy as a mediator between Protestant Flemings and catholic Wallonen. In addition it was an advisor of the Belgian king Leopold II. with its in former times colonial policy in the Belgian Congo. 1894 it gave its government work up, partly than criticism to the development in the Congo, changing into exploitation politics, partly due to a rejected draft to the elections on the basis of proportional representation right in the Belgian parliament. He withdrew himself again into his law office, remained however as a member of the klerikalen party in the parliament.
Already during its reign Beernaert strove for peacekeaping measures by international right. It supported particularly a diplomatic approximation with the Belgian neighbour state, the Netherlands. It was international chairmen “of the Law Association “and honour member” Institut de Droit international “. It belonged to the relevant persons, those the first international conference of peace 1899 into the Hague prepared and was also a president of the first commission. This function fulfilled it also 1907 at the second Hague conference of peace, where it particularly exerted itself the inviolability of the hostile property in the naval warfare. Apart from these functions he dressed the presidency of the inter-parliamentary union temporarily, was member on the constant court of arbitration and 1912 honorary president of the catholic league for peace and the international league of catholic Pazifisten. On that Geneva conference of the inter-parliamentary union it exerted itself few days before its death for a prohibition of the air war .
