71,061 units - on a long tradition back. Already around 1900 by count & pin the front wheel drive was invented, and the Steyr works took in account in - the 30's to the prominent automakers of Europe. Not least by the 2. However all Austrian manufacturers in postwar year tenth failed consequently to world war and by erroneous trends and were bought up (Steyr Daimler Puch AG, count & pin, Puch,…) or had to zusperren. The automobile industry in Austria nevertheless still plays a very important role. Because due to existing know-how and a high innovation degree invest international autocompanies, all in front BMW in Steyr or MAGNA in Graz, again and again into Austrian locations. Meanwhileexists 3 car cluster (AC Styria with 180 enterprises, under it also Slovenian, Croatian and Hungarian enterprises. 30.000 of the 44,000 coworkers is active in Austria; AC upper Austria, AC Vienna region), in order to promote the co-operation of the automakers and their supplier. Thus is thoseEfficiency and the international competitive power to be increased, in order to support the domestic locations. Because finally one has automobile industry since the extension to the East with the Slowakei and of them boom that approximately around Bratislava, which very close is because of the Austrian border, the competition directly before the proverbial“own strike-stubborn”.
But even in this time of the globalization, outsourcing, and the Wirtschaftsflaute in Europe, of Austria could obtain ancillary industries - predominantly medium-size enterprises with high export portion - turnover and paragraph increases. The automobile sector ranks therefore among the few strongly growing branches of industry in Austria (averageYearly growth between 2000 and 2003 ever 10%). Reason for it is naturally not population-causes small home demand, but the internationally good competitive ability, perceptibly by unbroken strong popularity with the German automakers, who the largest customer of Austrian automotives (BMW leaves a majority of all necessary engines in Steyrdevelop and manufacture, and/or. all types of diesel engines in the Motorenkompedenzzentrum Steyr develop) represent. Important customers abroad are among other things Daimler Chrysler, BMW, VOLKSWAGEN and Audi. The automobile sector gains billion with 38 Euro approximately 10% of the Austrian industrial achievement.
