history

the name Birkenfeld is Frankish origin and became for the first time in a document of the Trierer of bishop Egbert in the year 981 mentions. 1223 were divided the county Sponheim and Birkenfeld came to the rear county Sponheim in the possession of the princes on the strong castle with Trarbach. 1330 were developed the castle Birkenfeld and mentioned in a letter Lorettas of Sponheim. In the year 1332 lent emperors Ludwig the Bavarian Birkenfeld municipal rights.

To the death of the last count von Sponheim 1437 the rear county went to the Mark counts von Baden and the count von Veldenz. 1557 were introduced the Luthertum to the rear county. 1584 became BirkenfeldResidence of the Pfalzgrafen Karl von Pfalz Zweibrücken Birkenfeld, a collateral line of the Wittelsbacher. 1635 became Birkenfeld direct theater of the dreissigjährigen war. In the same year the plague in the place broke out and killed 416 inhabitants. 1776 became Birkenfeld under Mark count Karl Friedrich upper office of the Mark county bathing. 1798the left Rhine side was surrendered to part of the Saardepartements to France and Birkenfeld thereby.

After the completion to the French rule 1817 Birkenfeld arrived at the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. 1821 were built the new lock, which is today seat of the district administration.

1937 became Birkenfeld part of the PrussianDistrict Birkenfeld, that from the oldenburgischen region and the remainder circle pc. Wendel-Baumholder was formed. After the Second World War Birkenfeld belonged to the French zone of occupation and is since 1947 district town in the Land of the Federal Republic Rhineland-Palatinate.

in February 1797 committed the robber Johannes Bückler, mentioned Schinderhannes, a nocturnal break-down into the cloth factory of the brothers mute - the later charring and steel entrepreneurs to the Saar.
