Federal motorway 61
the federal motorway 61 (abbreviation: BAB 61) - short form: Motorway 61 (abbreviation: A 61) - leads across an overall length of 331 kilometers of the Netherlands border with Venlo to the motorway interchange Hockenheim, where she leads into A 6. It continues to run over the cities Moenchengladbach and mountain home by the Eifel and Hunsrück over Ludwigshafen and Speyer. Thereby the regions Cologne , Bonn , Koblenz , Mainz and Rhine-Neckar area are concerned.
Up to the last ~10 kilometers runs A 61 completely on the left Rhine side and therefore also as „linksrheinische motorway “one designates. Between Erftstadt and bath new-feeduses it the former strategic railway embankment.
The westernmost German motorway connection of the Netherlands and avoids Belgium represents A 61 to the South German motorway net and thereby the maximumloaded Cologne ring. Accordingly strongly this motorway is frequented by Netherlands truck and tourist. From thisReason is planned it, the BAB to the Netherlands “Snelweg” - system to attach. A clip, which leads south of Kaldenkirchen the past route across the border into the Netherlands, is planned. So that traffic increasing then can be better completed, is the BAB between this connection andthe cross Moenchengladbach on three lanes per carriageway to be extended.
For traffic one released A 61 in sections between 1971 and 1975, last gaps from Bedburg to Kerpen Türnich until 1987 were closed. The Mosel crosses the motorway over the Moseltalbrücke, at the building timeOf Europe highest motorway bridge.
A 61 is at present predominantly vierspurig. Some upward gradient distances in the Eifel and Hunsrück are developed, partially only the standing tire as lane were released on one side dreispurig.
The section Wanlo Jackerath was sechsspurig removed until September 2005, in order to take up the traffic of A 44,because of the open mining the Garzweiler II was interrupted. The development became by the RWE - subsidiary Rhine-brown finances. After 2017 is to be torn off A 61 in this section, since the open mining continues to progress in northwest direction. In the federal traffic route plan the complete sechsspurige development is A61 as the further need intended.
