Coppet is on 377 m and. M., in the extreme southwest of the Waadt, 13 km northnortheast the city Geneva (air line). The place extends on the bank of the Geneva lake, south the delta of the brook Greny.
The surface only straight 1,9 km ² of the large Gemeindegebiets covers a narrow section on the west bank of the Geneva lake. The municipality soil extends from the lakeshore both sides the delta of the Greny westward over the flat bank edge strip up to the adjacent elevator back. Here becomes with 425 m and. M. the highest point of Coppet reaches. From the municipality surface 1997 58% were allotted to settlements, 4% to forest and wood, 37% to agriculture and somewhat less than 1% were unproductive country.
The historical core of Coppet is surrounded by a green belt. The numerous new single family house and mansion accomodation are mostly at the edge of the Gemeindegebietes and add themselves to the settlement areas of the neighbour municipalities Tannay, Commugny and Founex .
with 2466 inhabitants (at the end of of 2005) belongs to Coppet to the medium sized municipalities of the canton Waadt. From the inhabitants 71,1% are französischsprachig, 10,5% English-language and 7,3% German-language (conditions 2000). The total population of Coppet amounted 1850 to 471 inhabitants, 1900 to 561 inhabitants. After 1960 (774 inhabitants) a rapid increase in population with a trebling of the number of inhabitants began within 40 years.
Coppet was long time an agrarian coined/shaped small town. Of 14. to in 19. Century was exploited a sandstone pit. In the course of the time something industry developed, in particular since end 18. Century the clock production. Today the agriculture has only a small meaning; there is something viticulture and agriculture in the environment. Jobs are in the trade and particularly in the service sector present. In the last decades Coppet developed owing to its attractive situation at the Geneva lake to a Wohngemeinde. Most employed persons are way commuter (approximately 60%), who works particularly in Geneva. Coppet is location of a secondary level school.
the municipality is traffic-technically very well opened. It is because of the main street, which runs from Geneva along the lakeshore after Nyon. The motorway connection Coppet to the A1 (would gene-dull-reflect) is only approximately 4 km far away from the place. To 14. April 1858 was taken the railway line from Morges to Coppet in enterprise, to 21. April of the same yearly took place the inauguration of the continuation after Versoix. For the fine dispersion in public traffic provides the post office autocourse, which operates from Coppet to Nyon.
Coppet can look back on a very long settlement tradition. At the lakeshore remnants of a settlement were found from the Bronzezeit. In the further traces from the Roman time are present: a milestone, a Grabstele and remainders of a mansion. The origin of Coppet is a yard property, which belonged to Commugny. The Mr. von Thoire Villars acquired the area 1271 of the house Savoyen and created the lock and the market town Coppet, which was equipped with the municipal law from the outset. The first documentary mention of the small town took place 1294 under the name Copetum, 1347 appeared the way of writing Copet.
1314 came the rule over Coppet to the aristocracy family Allamand. The duke of Savoyen united Coppet 1484 with other Lehen and raised it to baron shank. With the conquest of the Waadt by Berne in the year 1536 the small town came under the administration of the Vogtei Nyon. The baron shank Coppet, whose owner changed several times, possessed however the high jurisdiction. As city at the border between the Waadt and to the Pays de Gex Coppet profited from the carrying trade. After the collapse of the Ancien régime Coppet from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetik to the canton Léman, belonged, which came up afterwards with the coming into force of the Mediationsverfassung in the canton Waadt. 1798 were assigned it to the district Nyon and 1803 principal place of a circle. Under Germaine de Staël, who met persons of political and mental-literary rank on the lock during the Napoleoni time, attained Coppet European admittingness.
