Crazy Horse (English. wild horse - actual name Tashunka Witko, * between 1838 and 1842; † 6. September 1877 murdered) was a leader of the Oglala - Indian, a department of the western Sioux (self-designation Lakota).
It was born as a son of a medicine man and was noticeable through unusually bright skin and brown wavy hair. Already at the age of 16 years it made itself a name as courageous Krieger in the fight against other trunks. In the following years it strengthened this call and became starting from the year 1865 an important leader in the fight against the constantly penetrating white ones.
To 21. December 1866 it lured a command of white soldiers with away Phil Kearny in the today's Wyoming into a destroying ambush. The away had been established without valid contract in an important hunting ground freely living Sioux and Cheyenne Indian. To 2. August 1867 suffered Crazy Horse with 500 Kriegern with an assault on a Holzfällerkolonne in the proximity of the Forts a sensitive defeat, since the soldiers of the escort were equipped with modern repeating rifles for the first time. The continuous guerrilla war of the Indians under the supreme command of talk to tear the away off Phil Kearny approximately and other Forts around the hunting ground at the Powder River nevertheless forced Cloud the white ones (contract from away Laramie 1868).
In the year 1875 a government commission3 strove in vain to buy from the Lakota the forest area of the Black Hills where rich Goldvorkommen were assumed. To the final refraction of the resistance the US Government arranged itself in the next year expanded campaigns of the army against the last free master federations, around Crazy the Horse and Sitting bulletin scharten. First itself the Indians in the fights against general Crook at the Rosebud Creek ( 17 could. June 1876) and against general George Armstrong Custer at the Little bending horn River (25. June 1876) still maintain, whereby Crazy Horse of one of the substantial participants was.
In the following months the army in a merciless, the winter continuous destruction campaign the last free Sioux and Cheyenne departments, pursued which led to escape, devastating defeats and surrenders of the Indians, not least also because of the rapidly shrinking Bisonherden, their base of life.
After a miss-rich winter Crazy Horse with 900 hungernden Gefolgsleuten resulted to 6. May 1877 of the US army and was settled with away Robinson (Nebraska) under supervision of military. To 6. September of the same yearly it became by a soldier with a bayonet from the rear erstochen, when it opposed a dungeon detention, which had been arranged due to slandering.
Crazy Horse, a silent introvertierter man, who had always rejected it, to be photographed, was already for lifetimes with Indians and white ones a legend. Its death by force demoralized the self statement will of the Lakota lastingly.| Wikiquote: Crazy Horse - quotations |
