the Diözese Innsbruck (lat. Dioecesis Oenipontanus) is a Austrian Diözese of the church province Salzburg. It is responsible for the western and middle part of Nordtirol, as well as for Osttirol (see Tirol). The border to the Erzdiözese Salzburg forms Ziller in the Zillertal for historical reasons the river.
It is divided into the Pfarrgemeinden in Innsbruck as well as nine Dekanate, it belongs to 246 Pfarrgemeinden to the Diözese.
Patron of the Diözese is Petrus Canisius, which worked from 1560 to 1580 also in Tirol.
history
the area of the today's Diözese Innsbruck belonged long time to the Diözese Brixen, individual regions up to 19. Century also to the diocese Chur. After the First World War with the separation of South Tyrol a “Apostoli Administratur Innsbruck Feldkirch” of the Austrian part of the Diözese Brixen was furnished. Dr. Sigismund Waitz received the authority of a bishop as administrator and a bishop.
1938 were appointed later bishop Paulus Rusch the Apostoli administrator, and finally to 6. August 1964 the Diözese Innsbruck based, the Rusch starting from 26. September as a geweihter bishop managed. Originally also responsibly for Vorarlberg, for this Land of the Federal Republic 1968 the Diözese Feldkirch was created.
