E
E and/or. e is the fifth letter of the latin of alphabet and Vocally. The letter E has an average frequency of 17,40 % in German texts. It is thereby that most frequent letter in German texts.

In proto semitischen alphabet the E represented humans to one - possibly praying -. In phoenizischen alphabet this symbol was abstracted strongly and received the names He. With the Phoeniziern the letter had the sound value [h].
The Greeks took over the He as Epsilon. With the assumption they changed however the sound value, there the vocal-rich Greek language, only with indications of consonants written, too would have resulted in many ambiguities. The Greeks used the letter, over [eto write ]. At first orients still to the left, the letter with the change of the writing direction on left was reflected to the right.
The Etrusker took over the earlyGreek Epsilon, without modifying it, and used it likewise, over [eto write ]. The letter was taken over by the Romans, however later adapted to the Greek appearance.

The letter "E" has probably in the German language of all letters most discussion variations. Beside [ e ] is this:

In unbetonten syllables at the word ending "e" is often only written, not spoken. In many cases there is also the way of writing without "e" (volatile e). Example: I go instead of I go.
A double "e" is normally long spoken (lake), in addition, both sounds can be spoken separately (Orchide:e) - Alternatively to Orchidee).
Behind "i" "e" is used for the representation of a long vowel. [i?] (KnIE, VIEh). In some cases it (as with the Plural of "knees") is spoken also separately into high German (diphtongisiert), in other cases only in dialects (love).
An E behind a A, O or U serves also for the marking one Umlaut, above all, if on the keyboard or in Character set no letters for umlauts are present.
