Echallens is a political municipality and principal place of the district Echallens of the canton Waadt in Switzerland. The former German name Tscherlitz became particularly in the time of 16. up to 18. Century used, is today however uncommon.

Echallens is on 617 m and. M., 14 km north the canton capital Lausanne (air line). The municipality extends on the expanded high surface of the central bulk de Vaud, both sides the river talent, at the northwest edge of the heights of the Jorat, in the Waadtländer central country.
The surface 6,7 km ² of the large Gemeindegebiets covers a section of the easily waved plateau of the bulk de Vaud, the grain chamber of the canton Waadt. The area is flowed through from the east to the west of the talent, which withdraws above Echallens from the heights of the Jorat and within the range of the village only 10 to 20 m deep a small valley valley forms. The plateau exhibits a very small relief arrangement around Echallens only. In the extreme southwest extends the municipality soil into the valley of the Mortigue (a side brook talent). The only larger collection is in the southeast in the forest area of the Bois de la Commune, in with 672 the m and. M. the highest point is reached by Echallens. From the municipality surface 1997 was allotted 18% to settlements, 13% to forest and wood, 68% to agriculture and somewhat less than 1% was unproductive country.
To Echallens expanded new residential districts as well as some single yards belong. Neighbour municipalities of Echallens are Villars le Terroir, Poliez le Grand, Bottens, Malapalud, Assens, Saint Barthélemy and Goumoens la Ville.
with 4843 inhabitants (at the end of of 2005) belongs to Echallens to the medium sized municipalities of the canton Waadt. From the inhabitants 89,1% are französischsprachig, 2,9% German-language and 2,1% portugiesischsprachig (conditions 2000). The total population of Echallens amounted 1850 to 957 inhabitants, 1900 to 1096 inhabitants. After a slow however continuous growth until 1970 (1643 inhabitants) an intensified development thrust began, connected with a trebling of the number of inhabitants within 30 years.
Echallens is a regional handels and administrative centre and a center of the fruitful agriculture area of the bulk de Vaud. To end 19. Century was Echallens a village predominantly coined/shaped by the agriculture. Today the agriculture and the fruit-growing only a meaning in the acquisition structure of the population have marginal note.
Toward end 19. Century began also in Echallens the industrialization , concerned the place however far less than other Waadtländer municipalities of comparable size. Therefore the municipality developed only slowly to the industrial place. Around 1910 the industry was mainly coined/shaped by the processing of the agricultural products, besides there were enterprises of mechanical engineering, the building of metals and textile industry.
The economic upswing used since the 1970er years with the creation of new trade zones. Today there are numerous smaller and middle enterprises, on construction industry, mechanical engineering (in particular agriculture machines), the carrying trade, the horticulture, the computer technology as well as on mechanical workshops concentrates.
The service sector on itself combines the principal part of the jobs (nearly 70%). There are numerous working premises in the administration, in the bank and insurance as also in the catering trade and hotel trade. Echallens is seat of the district court and location of an agriculture cooperative with grain silos.
In the last decades the village owing to the good traffic route and attractive situation to a Wohngemeinde developed. Expanded ones new populated areas developed particularly at the east edge of Echallens on the right of talent as well as in the south. Some employed person are therefore also way commuters, who follow in the region Lausanne of their work.
education and sport
as regional center have Echallens all school stages from the primary school to the High School. 1977 were opened a new school center. Furthermore there are numerous sports sites in the place (under it tennis court, football fields and a Fitnesscenter).
the municipality is traffic-technically well opened. It is because of a main street of Lausanne via Echallens after Yverdon les Bains. The motorway connection La Sarraz to the 1981 A1 ( Lausanne Yverdon) opened is approximately 7 km far away from the local centre.
To 2. June 1874 was taken the distance section Cheseaux sur Lausanne - to Echallens of the narrow-gauge railway Chemin de fer Lausanne Echallens Bercher (LIVE) in enterprise. The continuation of this line until Bercher became to 24. November 1898 inaugurated. Beside the station there are still the stops Sur Roche and Grésaley in the external accomodation of Echallens. For the fine dispersion in public traffic the Buslinien provide after Chavornay, Yverdon and Thierrens.
the Gemeindegebiet of Echallens was already in very in former times time settled. Remnants of a bronze-temporal foundry were discovered as well as by grave fields from the La-Tène-time and from the early Middle Ages.
The first documentary mention of the place took place 1141 under the name Charlens. The designations Challeins, Escharlens ( 1177 ) appeared later, Eschallens (1228), Eschalleins (1279), for the first time Echallens (1315), afterwards still Echalans (1381) and Echallan (1414). The place name decreases/goes back on the family name Carl (today French Charles) and means at the people Carl.
Originally the place belonged to the bishop von Lausanne. End 12. Century justified the Mr. von Montfaucon, a branch of the counts von Montbéliard in the free county Burgund, the rule Echallens and left in the second half 13. Century build the lock. 1317 were recognized the sovereignty of the house Savoyen over the rule Echallens by the family de Montfaucon. Marks, which had developed in the course of the time around the lock, around 1350 with a Ringmauer one surrounded, and received 1351 municipal rights to Echallens. Since that time in the small town a weekly market was held, however starting from that the 16. Century due to the relatively small meaning of Echallens was accomplished only irregularly.
1410 ignored the rule over Echallens to the house Chalon, which originated from Burgund. Therefore the oath comrades seized after the Burgunderkriegen of this rule and placed them 1476 under the common administration of Freiburg, Berne and the sieved other places. In the contract of Beromünster 1484 Berne extracted the rights of these seven places to Echallens by a payment of compensation. From now on the Vogtei Orbe Echallens, to which the former rule area Echallens as well as Exklaven the city Orbe and the village Mex belonged , under the common administration of Berne and Freiburg stood. In the five-yearly rotation Berne or Freiburg placed the Vogt, which had its seat in Echallens.
Due to the common rule, could not intersperse catholic Freiburg and since the reformation Protestant Berne the latter the reformation in the Vogtei Orbe Echallens. The area remained therefore long time by the majority catholic, and numerous churches, so also those of Echallens, were in equal numbers used during partly more than 300 years.
After the collapse of the Ancien régime Echallens from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetik to the canton Léman, belonged, which came up afterwards with the coming into force of the Mediationsverfassung in the canton Waadt. During some time on the fact it was even discussed whether Echallens should become as counterweight to the center Lausanne capital of the new canton Waadt. Since 1798 it is district principal place of the again created district Echallens.

the lock of Echallens 13 became in the second half . Century on a small hill establishes. It was plundered 1475 by the oath comrades. After the reconstruction it served the Vögten of Orbe Echallens as residence. Today only a round tower is received from the medieval building, which became north wing 1719 delighted. Since 1816 the lock is in the possession of the municipality, which accommodated therein the local administration and a primary school.
Although in Echallens 1141 a church were already mentioned, are the today's buildings of churches of relatively new date. At the place of the church in equal numbers of 1727 1883 the today's catholic church was built. The reformed church comes from 1865.
Of the former Ummauerung of the small town nothing more is received. The Hôtel de Ville (city hall) was established 1781. In the local centre are some citizen and Patrizierhäuser 17. to 19. Century receive, among them the house Bezenson and the Hôtel of the Balances. 1989 took place the inauguration of the Maison you Blé et you Pain (handicraft museum).
