of the black-and-white - film consists of a lining up of surrealistischer pictures and scenes. The pro log shows a man, who sharpens a razor, thena cloud, which by-pulls before the full moon. The man cuts a woman with the razor, sitting before him, by the eye.

Further absurd scenes, those by no recognizable action belong to each other - probably however the same two persons show - are throughZwischentitel (eight years later, against three o'clock in the morning, before sixteen years, in spring) roughly from each other separated. Well-known attitudes are the chests of a woman, whom transform under the hands of the man into their gesäss, onein the door gotten jammed hand with a hole, from that ants creep and the man, who pulls different things on two ropes behind itself: among them two with ever a Eselskadaver filled concert wing and two brothers of the arm school (seminarists).

Background

Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí knew each other already since its study time in the middle of the 20's. 1928 met it again in Figueres (Spain), the hometown of Dalí. On this occasion they told themselves mutually two of their dreams:Buñuels dream contained a long cloud, which cut through the moon, „like a razor-blade an eye “cuts. Dalís dream contained a hand, which full ants was.

They decided to convert their ideas cinematic and wrote within one week with the technology of the„automatic letter “a film script: Nothing at the film should be rationally, logical or psychologically explainable. Also the title was selected without purchase to the film. Both dreams find in the finished film use.

The money for the production receivedBuñuel of its nut/mother, whereby it spent half of the money according to own indication in Paris restaurants and not on the film. Turning work took place to the turn of the year 1928/29 in a studio in Billancourt and in Le Havre, them lasted aboutfourteen days. Buñuel cut the film then in Paris and showed it and othersOne Ray and Louis Aragon, which was inspired. In April 1929 the public premiere followed.

For the company of the silent movie Buñuel on a Grammophon put, thatbehind the canvas was, alternating music smelling pool of broadcasting corporations of Wagners (Tristan and Isolde) and Argentine Tangos up. During a new performance 1960 the same music on one was clay-purely added. In addition, it seems to exist a film copy, on thatadditionally still Ludwig van Beethoven to hear is. Luis Buñuel does not mention Beethoven in its book my last sigh. Either this version was not authorized by him, or it could not do itself with the minute of its book no more to thoseDeviation of the two versions remind. 1983 toned Mauricio Kagel the film for Swiss the television.

The scenes caused a appearing strange and abhorrence with many spectators as expected, but parts that Paris press were inspired. Buñuel and Dalí reacted differently to it(see quotations).

criticism

picture from the initial scene

in particular the opening scene, in which the young woman with a razor the eye is cut, attained world fame. This scene calls Urängste with all humans awake, completely independently of their cultural Context. For the trick a calf eye was used.

The film fulfilled into its total Irrationalität the principles, how it had formulated André Breton in the communist manifesto of the Surrealismus ( Paris 1924) before some years. Buñuel and Dalí became suddenfamous and to those Paris Surrealistengruppe taken up. Short time they worked later again together on the film the golden age.
