Ernst Bertram

Ernst Bertram (* 27. July 1884 in Wuppertal; † at the 3. May 1957 in Cologne) was a German spirit scientist and writer, who were close to the circle around Stefan George.

Bertram studied literature science in Bonn and attained a doctorate 1907 with a work over Adalbert founder. Followed different essayistic writings over Hugo of Hofmannsthal, Stefan George, Theodor Fontane, Gustave Flaubert, Conrad Ferdinand Meyer and Thomas's man. With the latter Bertram was closely friendly over longer time and became even godfather one of its children.

1918 appeared Bertrams book „Nietz - attempt of a mythology “, with which he admits in literarily interested circles fast became and which on Thomas's man exerted larger influence. 1919 were appointed Bertram as a teacher to the University of Bonn, 1922 received it a Professur in Cologne.

After the seizure of power of the national socialists 1933 a time of political involving followed. To what extent Bertram in the course of the next 12 years dissociated itself internally and outwardly from the national socialism, cannot be judged finally. Its relationship to the third realm is divergence and at least ansatzweise comparably with that other “more conservatively” artist such as Josef Weinheber to see Hans Pfitzner or William Furtwängler.
