Family (biology)

the family (Latin: Familia) is a hierarchical stage of biological systematics.

It stands between main statuses order and kind. Directly over the family the over family can (Latin: Superfamilia) stand, under it the Unterfamilie (Latin: Subfamilia).

In the Zoologie exists the convention that the scientific surname up - idae ends (z. B. Run beetle: Carabidae).

In the Botanik against it the family designation ends usually up - aceae (for example basket bloom plants: Asteraceae). Often lead themselvestheir designations of particularly well-known kinds of the family off (for example with the lily plants Liliaceae), in addition, morphologic characteristics of the family can be named-giving (so with the lip bloom plants Labiatae).
