Formazza (dt. Pomatt) is a municipality with 461 inhabitants (conditions: 2004) in the Italian province Verbano Cusio Ossola (VB), region Piemont. It covers the Val Formazza, the highest section from the river of the Toce (wdt. Riis) of formed valley. Over the Griespass (border crossing to Switzerland) a connection to the Nufenenpass exists, of where out one in the Goms in the canton whale-read or in the Val Bedretto in the canton Tessin arrive can. In former times the valley was an important traffic route, led of whale-reads nevertheless a seam way over the Griespass into the Lombardei.

history
in the Middle Ages the Val Formazza of Walsern settles from the Goms to comb and thus German-language. Numerous German Flurnamen remind until today of this settlement.
