A Gegenkultur is a certain, long-term socially effective sub-group (subset) of a given human culture.Contrary to the subculture place - after J. Milton Yinger - their members the primary values and standards in question and develop their own system at social values and standards (see vision, utopia).
Examples of such Gegenkulturen finditself in the Pietismus, in the early workers' movement and in some youth cultures 20. Century (moving bird, 68er-Bewegung). A prime example for a modern Gegenkultur is the hard core Punk - movement.
