George David Birkhoff

George David Birkhoff (* 21. March 1884 in Overisel, Michigan; † 12. November 1944 in Cambridge, Massachusetts) was an US-American mathematician.

Birkhoff is today at the most well-known for its formulation of the suppl. desert set. This combines realizations from physics (ergodic theorem) with an abstract formulation from the masstheorie.

Further spheres of activity of Birkhoff were number theory, Dreikörperproblem and the four-color set.

The mathematician save Birkhoff (1911-1996) was his son.
