Gian Lorenzo Bernini (also: Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini * 7. December 1598 in Neapel; † 28. November 1680 in Rome) was one of the most important Italian sculptors and architects of the baroque.

It had relevant influence on the development of the baroque sculpture and architecture in Rome. Bernini in the sculptor workshop of its father Pietro Bernini was trained (1562-1629). It is buried in the church Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.

Robbery of the Proserpina

First it becomes with sculptures such as David (Bernini), which Pluto and Proserpina or Apollo and Daphne admit groups. They are to be seen and fallen in the mansion Borghese in Rome by their unusual dynamics, direction of motion, dramatic light shade effects and exciting bearing up. Its most important promoter,Pope Urban VIII., entrusts the young Bernini with the building of the canopy over the Petrusgrab in the Peter cathedral, which Bernini from bronze made (1624-1633; see photo).

At its architectural work, which takes their beginning here, the mixture from plastics and architecture, those is worth mentioningalso in „the twitching of the holy Theresa “(1646-1652), in which „Cathedra Petri “(1656-1666) is to be observed or in the church Sant' Andrea aluminium Quirinale ( 1658-1670), established by it. Bernini completed 1629 the Palazzo Barberini, created among other things the Kolonnaden to Peter place (1656-1667 under Alexander VII.) and established the four-current wells on the Piazza Navona (1647-1651 under Innozenz X.). Bernini worked in the course of its life for eight Popes and left Rome non except for an exception: The French “sun king” Ludwig of the XIV called it,in order to prepare plans for the new building of the Louvre. Its drafts for the new building of the Louvre (1665) in Paris have - although they were not implemented in the long run - lasting influence on the European profane architecture exercised. Its more generously and for the baroque classicism style which can be added did not remain howeverwithout criticism. Thus Borromini accused to him to copy in unorigineller way the stylistic achievements me long lot.

Beside Bernini Alessandro Algardi ( 1595-1654) applies as sculptor and a building master as a main master of the Roman baroque sculpture. To the well-known pupils Berninis belonged to Ercole Ferrata, Antonio Raggi, Domenico Guidi and Cosimo fan cellos.
