Glyptothek

a Glyptothek is a collection antique stone sculptures and cut stones. The term Glyptothek became of the librarian of the Bavarian king Ludwig I. invented and derived from the old-Greek verb “glyptein”, which cut about “in stone” meant. Er ist in Anlehnung an den altgriechischen Begriff der "Pinakothek" gebildet worden (von Pinax: Bild, Theke: Aufbewahrungsort).

Nur zwei Skulpturen-Museen führen heute diesen Namen:

• Glyptothek in München am Königsplatz
• Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Kopenhagen
