Large Arber
the large Arber is with 1456 m the highest mountain of the Bavarian forest and becomes therefore also as a “king of theBavarian forest " designates.
Geographically the large Arber belongs however to the Böhmerwald.
Since 1939 large parts of the Arbergebietes stand under nature protection. The large Arber and surrounding forest areas are in the possession of the princes of Hohenzollern. Beside the large Arberheard to the group of mountains also the small Arber with 1384m. Underneath the summits are the large Arbersee and the small Arbersee. The summit is drawn by two military radar stations, the so close at the Czech border during of the Cold war were established, in order to be able to supervise the air traffic in the Eastern Bloc.
The large Arber was opened by several ski runways in the past also for winter sports. By a consistent renewal of the lift systems in the last years, with the buildinga 6er-Umlaufgondelbahn (the work hereditary suppl. course) and the building from 2 6er-Sesselliften the skiing area at the Arber ascended to the most modern skiing area in Germany.
