Extended family
One Extended family ' consists of a larger group of related persons over several away.
Parents with their can do this and child children its, as well as Uncle, Aunts or other relatives. In former times often also that became Gesinde in addition counted. Those FamiliesMembers live usually together in a house or a settlement, and they form an economical unit, the z.B. in common or one exists.
Into that Industrialized countries play extended families quite still another role, however rather in the oberschicht. This is not easily accessible to a sociological analysis, so that the extended families appear ' disappeared ' as her. However they are in that more strongly spreads. That has particularly with the predominantly agrarian economic structure and are missing to a large extent Social system to do, so that children are the "pension precaution" of parents (see in addition Family (sociology)).
In societies, which those , the family federations permit can fail again clearly more largely.
The myth of the extended family
In Central Europe the number and size of the former extended families are often overrated. In addition the following aspects contribute:
- Up to Turn of the century were the mother and Child number of deaths very highly. For example died 1832-1835 in of 1.000 living-born of 302 children still in the first lebensjahr, and in the years 1901-1905 of nevertheless still 240 children.
- Thus these families were maximally 2x larger than today. The average household size in the Bavaria of the years until 1871 4.6 persons amounted to, rose 1900 at short notice on 4,7 persons on and sank to on 4,3 persons.
- To this fact also it contributed that on the country the male Marriage age at over 28 years and that one of the women lay at 27 years (after intermediate sinking it lies now again similarly as before 100 years). By the low and the earlier therefore only about 15 years stood for those from children to the order stood.
- Altogether therefore the families with several made less out, than generally one accepts.
A further aspect is the population portion, that one was hardly possible. Thus lived and worked in many the earlier family stranger persons, which makes the structure of the "extended families" with difficulty visible. 1910 lived Gesinde in 20% of the households Bayerns, to which still 11% Subtenant and/or Bettgeher came. In lived 1.282 million Dienstboten in the house of the employer; 1925 was it 1.016 million and 1939 nevertheless still 995.000 persons. Sociologically prevailed also in our past Small families and incomplete forwards. The alleged transition from the large to the small family is unfounded therefore, and/or. it concerns only the number that and hardly those of the generations.
