Haarlem

Haarlem is a city in the region Kennemerland and the capital of the province north Holland, the Netherlands. The city is because of the river Spaarne, which brought in it the surname Spaarnestad. The municipality Haarlem borders on the municipalities Haarlemmermeer, Heemstede, Bloemendaal and Velsen and counts 147,519 inhabitants (2003, CBS). The city is since 1853 the seat of the Roman-catholic diocese Haarlem.

history

Haarlem settlement developed to the Spaarne and developed on the communications from south to north as Geest. The city became residence of the counts of Holland. Count Wilhelm II of HollandHaarlem lent 1245 municipal rights. Haarlemer knights had themselves in former times in this century, 1219, under count Wilhelm I. decided to undertake the fifth crusade. Therefore is to today a cross in the Stadtwappen.

The oldest one, still appearing, daily paper are still printed in Haarlem.In 1656 for the first time „de Oprechte Haerlemse Courant appeared “, now „Haarlems Dagblad “. The company Johan Enschedé is well-known special printering among other things, also for the foreign country Cash notes and document of identification documents manufactures.
