Haarlem is a city in the region Kennemerland and the capital of the province north Holland, the Netherlands. The city is because of the river Spaarne, which brought in it the surname Spaarnestad.
The municipality Haarlem borders on the municipalities Haarlemmermeer, Heemstede, Bloemendaal and Velsen and counts 147,519 inhabitants (2003, CBS). The city is since 1853 the seat of the Roman-catholic diocese Haarlem.

Haarlem settlement developed to the Spaarne and developed on the communications from south to north as Geest. The city became residence of the counts of Holland.
