It studied natural sciences and pharmacy at the University of Copenhagen, at which he was starting from 1806 a professor for chemistry and physics. When he deceased to 1851 in Copenhagen, he was a recognized physician, physicist, chemist and astronomer.
1819 isolatedit for the first time Piperidin.
1820 he discovered the magnetic effect of the electric current with a compass and designed in the same year the Piezometer.

Ørsted was not first, a connection between electricity and magnetism discovered. Already 18 years before were made its observations of the Italian Gian Domenico Romagnosi and came again into oblivion. Ørsted recognized immediately the consequence of the linkage of both phenomena and released the development of the electricity and electro-technology .
After Oersted the outdated was shortened, designated cgs - unit of the magnetic field strength with the unit symbol Oe (symbols: H).
