Particularly up to the case of the iron curtain Hardegg was very isolated. To Tschechien there is only the Thayabrücke Hardegg - Čížov. This is reflected also in the removing number of the inhabitants again. As only restaurant factor the increasing tourism is to be called. The highest inhabitant conditions since beginning of the statistic recordings by the state 1890 were to be already registered, when in Hardegg 3,209 inhabitants were counted. Since that time - with the only exception of the period between the two countings 1939 and 1951 - the number of inhabitants constantly decreases. This is by the way characteristic for the district Hollabrunn, in which since 1890 no more inhabitant increases were registered.
