situation and economics

Hattem is because of the motorway A50, Arnheim - Zwolle, only 4 km south of Zwolle and to the IJssel (yachting port). Hattem has some industry, among other things Materials for high and foundation engineering. The tourism is however of more importance.

history

of the im.9. Century as Hattheim testified for the first time documentary place received 1299 the municipal law. Because of the situation to the IJssel opposite Zwolle in Overijssel it was strategically important for the duchy funds in the Middle Ages. It was some time member of the German Hanse. In the eighty-year old war it was besieged in vain by Spanish troops (1629). Also Hattemwas in the years 1672 - 1673 of troops of the bishop von Münster occupy. After 1700 the trade and thus the economic meaning of the city ran back strongly.

Hattem has a well received, pictorial town centre, with many old houses from that16.- 18. Century. The dyke gate (15.Jhdt.) is the landmark of the small town. Also the city hall (1619-1625) and a gothical church are worth seeing.

Hattem has some small, but pretty museums:

the baker's shop museum (where children themselves can bake bread)
the Anton Pieck museum over the artist Anton Pieck out Haarlem (1895-1987), whose romantic designs of the “good, old time” decorate also many calendars.
