the capital region Brussels (französ.: Région de Bruxelles Capital, niederl.: Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest, dt. amtl: Region Brussels capital) is one of the three regions of Belgium. Itcovers the bilingual (French and niederländischsprachige) area of the capital Brussels. It is arranged into 19 independent municipalities, which form however a coherent urban settlement area. The city Brussels, which covers the city centre of Brussels, is one of these 19 municipalities.
The politics policies culture, language, Education and parts of social welfare matters fall in Belgium not into the competence of the regions, but into that of the communities. The französischsprachigen inhabitants of the capital region Brussels (approx. 80% of the population) belong to the French community of Belgium and represented by the COCOF (Commission communautaire française; dt.French community commission), the niederländischsprachigen inhabitants (approx. 20% of the population) to the Flämi community and represented by the VGC (Vlaamse Gemeenschapscommissie; dt. Flämi community commission). Both commissions (COCOF and VGC) are part the GGC (Gemeenschappelijke Gemeenschapscommissie) /COCOM (Commission communautaire commune) (dt. Joint community commission), the united meeting of both community commissions. In Brussels therefore many institutions of the training system and the culture life exist, once doubly französischsprachig and once niederländischsprachig, within the competence of the respective community.
Its own regional Brussels identity, like it in the regions Flanders, and less strongly in Wallonie, exists, has itself reactively andin demarcation also in Brussels develops.
