This son showed it the book written by its father at that time in the conditions of the first attendantover the fall of the whaler Essex after an Pottwal attack, from which only few copies existed. Only 1850 came Melville however by the efforts of father-in-law Shaw locally into Nantucket into the possession of a copy of this book. The beginning of the tragedy described in this book- the Pottwalangriff - Melville impressed so much that he made these the fulminanten end of Moby thick.
