Hokkaidō (jap.: 北海道, translates about: North Sea district) is the second largest island of Japan. Together with several surrounding small islands it forms the northernmost Prefecture of the country. Congruently with the prefecture Hokkaidō designates also a region in Japan.

The prefecture counted at the end of of 2005 about 5.7 millions Inhabitant, under it the indigene minority of the Ainu. The largest city, at the same time seat of the prefecture administration, is Sapporo.

history

Hokkaidō is the homeland of the people of the Ainu, from their language many designations of the island, howfor example also the name of the capital Sapporo, result.
