ISO 3166-2
ISO 3166-2 is the second part of the standard ISO 3166. It defines codes for states with subnationalen units and dependent areas. It gives approx. 3700 of such codes. They were defined 1998 world-wide for each country and extended since then, as soon as a new stateis added. With new type characters, which appear since 2000, or updates it changes the entries of the appropriate country if this becomes necessary (e.g. after an administrative reform).

] format the codes of two parts,by a hyphen (typographic also Trennstrich called) are of each other separate. The first part gives the national code by to three capital letters, to two numbers or to an alphanumeric mixes, according to the standard ISO 3166 again. The second part consists of tothree alphanumeric indications, which are based on national standards.

the Ländercodes can in that ISO-3166-1-Kodierliste to be looked up. If the Ländercode is well-known, the following matrix is to be used, in order to arrive at the list of the ISO 3166-2-Codes.
Length stands here for number of indications after the hyphen. The individual code tables are again divided according to the kind of the indications. For example those haveCode for Estonia a length of two numbers behind the hyphen (EE-37 to EE-86).
