Imperatriz
Imperatriz a city is in Brazilian Federal State Maranhão.
It became in the year 1852 under the name Colônia Militar de Santa Tereza DO Tocantins based. 1856 were renamed it to honours of the empress (Imperatriz) Theresia Christina. 1924 was given municipal rights.
Due to the missing infrastructure and binding the development ran very sluggishly. Only with the completion of the freeway BR 010 Belem-Brasilia in the year 1962 a very stormy growth took place. Imperatriz developed after Sao Luis to the secondarymost important city of the Federal State. Today the city is the regional center in the triangle Tocantins, Pará and Maranhao.
The estimated number of inhabitants in the year 2004 amounted to 231.950. The city lives primarily of trade and services, Industry is hardly present.
