Indian Subkontinent

as Indian Subkontinent is designated the land mass south the Himalayas, on which the States of Pakistan, India and Bangladesh lie.

The designation therefore agitates that it concerns here a continental plate separated from the eurasischen plate, which drifted in the process of geologic history for a long time independently by the Indian ocean. With its collision with Asia the Himalaya was up-piled up.

In the colloquial language also the shortening designation “ the Subkontinent “is used, since it concerns the only such object, which is called frequently in such a way.
