International combination of the ecological agriculture movements
the international combination of the ecological agriculture movements (IFOAM) is an international combination of750 organizations in 108 countries with the goal of a world-wide introduction more ecologically, more socially and economically reasonable systems, which are based on the principles of the ecological agriculture.
history
the combination 1972 of the president at that time of the French biological farmer's association “Nature et Progrès” based. At the beginning of gift it no hierarchical organisational structure. Only due to the legal requirements of a gemeinützige organization had to be specified responsible person. Claude Aubert was appointed the first Secretary-General in such a way. Present president (conditions 2005) is Gerald A. Gentleman man. Already three years after the establishment by the five origin members the combination had increased to 50 members from 17 nations.
1984 were selected the executive committee introduced in the meantime again and prepared the employment of a full-time managing director. That became necessary, since the number of members had increased in the meantime on over 100 and in the subsequent years to over 500 continued to rise. The Professionalisierung progressed, which also to the fact it became clear that increasingly members from the economic life (processing plant, dealer) participated. In the nineties the organization stepped the UN and the FAO into co-operation with international participants , all in front. The scientific exchange will know the activities with own conferences promoted and to special groups to be concentrated concerned.
The head office is in Bonn.
The IFOAM developed, apart from other activities, a standard for ecological agriculture and a framework for Öko certifying, which pointing the way for e.g. the EEC-Öko-regulation was.
