Johan Huizinga

Johan Huizinga (* 7. December 1872 in Groningen, the Netherlands; † 1. February 1945 in De Steeg with Arnheim) was a Netherlands culture historian.

Huizinga comes of to a mennonitischen Predigerfamilie and studied first indogermanistische literature history and in the Nebenfach history. Between 1905 and 1915Huizinga was a professor for general and Netherlands history in Groningen. 1915 he transferred the chair for general history to suffering and taught there up to the locking of the university by the German Besatzer 1940. From 1915 to 1932 Huizinga was an editor of the magazine De Gids, one of the most steeped in tradition culture magazines of the Netherlands. 1916 it became memberthe royal Academy of Sciences in Amsterdam and 1929 chairmen of the spirit-scientific class. In the twenties he was Netherlands consultant of the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial of the Rockefeller Foundation and bereiste in this characteristic 1926 three months long American education and science mechanisms. 1932/33 was itRector of the Leidener university. 1933 it became member of the Commission international one de Coopération Intellectuelle of the Völkerbunds.
