Quantz was born 1697 as a fifth child of the Hufschmieds Andreas Quantz in Oberscheden. After the death of parents 1702 and/or. 1707 took over its uncle Justus Quantz, which was Stadtmusikus in Merseburg, and which organist gravel weather the training. In order to come vocationally further, it studied 1717 with J.D. Zelenka and J.J. Fux in Vienna; in the year after it took transverse flute instruction with Pierre Gabriel Buffardin (Dresden) and began to compose. A study trip 1724-26 led it to Italy to F. Gasparini as well as 1726/27 to Paris and London. By these journeys he came also with the arising early classical period soon into contact.
1728 it became seamist with the Saxonian And the Crown Prince at that time Friedrich became acquainted with royal chapel , to which he gave from now on flute instruction. 1737 married Quantz Anna Rosina Carolina Schindler. After Friedrich had become king, Quantz became 1741 as Kammermusikus and yard composer to the Prussian yard to Berlin appoint, where he Friedrich daily instructiongave, house concerts led and composed. In addition it built flutes, improved it by adding the second flap and wrote to 1752 the flute text book attempt of an instruction the flute traversière to play ( the Traversflöte had itself also in the French style interspersed).
Quantz remained up to its death(1773) at the yard Friedrichs. In the year 1755 William Marpurg appeared to the music a Autobiografie in „the historical-critical Beyträgen for the admission “ of Friedrich; a further followed 1762 after Italian and particularly in detail 1877 by his Urneffen Albert Quantz.
the compositions Quantz are mostly for transverse flute intends. Among them more than 200 flute Solosonaten, about 300 flute concerts, are 45 Triosonaten and 9 horn concerts.
Further Flötenduos, - terzette and - quartets are delivered, and apart from songs the new church melodies… (Choralmelodien to 22 deserts of Gellert from 1760).
Most works are present only as handwriting , since only very few pieces in the pressure appeared. In its place of birth Scheden take place regularly concerts with Quantz' works. Its flute school attempt of an instruction to play the flute traversière (1752) became still 1992 in Munich &Kassel edits again. It answered 1755 to a criticism on it in Marpugs “contributions”: Application pour la flûte traversière à deux clefs, o.J.
