John William Strutt, 3. Lord Rayleigh
John William Strutt, since 1873 3. Lord Rayleigh, (* 12. November 1842 in long Ford Grove, Meldon, England; † 30. June 1919 Terlins Place with Witham, England) was an English physicist (Nobelpreisfor physics 1904).

in the childhood was Rayleigh of weak constitution, its school attendances in Eton and Harrow were thereforeonly of short duration. It showed first indications of a certain mathematical gift in the boarding school of Reverend Warner, where it was prepared for the university attendance.it went to 1861 to the Trinity college into Cambridge, in order to study mathematics.

After its return one year after deceased its father and Rayleigh had traditionallyto take over the agriculture of the family, which he handed to 1876 over to his younger brother.
Now he could dedicate himself again fully to the natural sciences. 1879 it followed James Clerk Maxwell as a professor for experimental physics and director/conductor of the Cavendish laboratory in Cambridge destined. 1887 to 1905 he was a professor at the Royal institution OF Great Britain.
1919 were lord Raleigh president of the Society for Psychical Research.
He married 1871 Evelyn Balfour, the sister of the later prime minister Arthur Balfour, 1. EarlOF Balfour, and had three sons.
Rayleigh researched first in the areas of the optics and the oscillation teachings, which it treated to a large extent mathematically. Later it expanded its interests so much, which it almost thatTotal area of physics took off:Electricity, thermodynamics, Wellentheorie and statistic physics.
Rayleigh prepared the work of Sir William Ramsay on the area of the noble gases. Around 1883 Rayleigh observed that from air won nitrogen is heavier thanfrom nitrogen compounds won nitrogen. Whereupon Ramsay experimented with atmospheric nitrogen and found so the noble gas argon. Rayleigh and Ramsay worked from 1884 to 1885 of far together on the characterisation the atmospheric gases.
Rayleigh explained the blue color of the skyon the basis the dispersion of the light at small particles (Rayleigh scattering).
Raleigh gave the duplex theory , which to 1907substantially to understanding the procedure when “natural hearing” with humans contributes.
