political system

to each canton has an own condition and own legislative, carrying out and quite-speaking authorities. All cantons possess an a chamber parliament (large advice, canton advice, land advice, parliament; see also: Canton parliament). Thishas depending upon canton 58 to 200 seats in parlament. The canton government (government advice, government, Council of State, condition commission) exists depending upon canton of five to seven members.

All ranges, those not assigned by the Swiss Federal Constitution the federation and/or. by a Federal law to be regulated,belong into the authority of the cantons (national organization, public education, partial health service, partial planning and building law, police nature, partial court system, notary's office nature, kantonales and local tax law and. In two cantons, Glarus as well as Appenzell Innerrhoden, determines the people at the land municipality its canton representatives anddecides on questions of substance. In all other cantons elections and tunings are completed over the urn.

history

the so-called Urkantone, which 1291 justified the confederation, are Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. In the old person confederation the cantons also places were called. Therefore one speaks regarding the expansion phases of Switzerland of the eight old persons places and the thirteen old persons places (and/or. the achtörtigen andthe dreizehnörtigen confederation). Allied, which full member of the confederation were not, turned places were called.

In the Helveti republic (1798 - 1803) the cantons were bare administrative districts without autonomy rights. The fixing of the boundaries was changed, over approximately equal large cantonsto create and to smash the old order. With the Mediationsverfassung 1803 the number of the cantons increased to 19and with the Viennese congress 1815 on 22. today the number of the cantons is mostly indicated as 26, sometimes as 23. That gets off that six cantons (Obwalden, Nidwalden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Basel city and Basel country) for historical reasons half cantons to be called (up to the total revision of the Federal Constitution of 1999 this distinction was made). This distinction is only in the case of the occupation of the condition advice and with the condition more relevant, has however no influence on thoseinternal autonomy, why is correct to speak of 26 cantons however 23 conditions.

The usual sequence of the cantons (see following list) is fixed in the Federal Constitution. It has however a much older origin. In the confederation of the eightOld places stood the cities Zurich, Berne and Luzern as suburbs in the hierarchy before the land cantons. The further cantons stand in the order of their entry.
