Canton school
the canton school or High School is in Switzerland a resuming school, which is carried by the cantons and usually to university studies leads. The High School, how the school is otherwise also called, locks with the Matura (Abitur). The Matura entitled in addition, to other more fastidious training as for instance those to the Krankenpfleger or to the Lokomotivführer. It covers the Untergymnasium and/or pro High School within the range of the mandatory school time only. Colloquially the canton school “Kanti” is also called.
The actual High School (upper High School) covers the last 3,5 or 4 years before the Matura, the pro High School the last 4 years within the nine years lasting mandatory school time. A Abgänger with Matura is usually 19 or 20 years old. The structure of the upper High School - actually the entire Swiss educational system - varies strongly from canton to canton. Thus one reaches the Matur in the canton Aargau with 13 school years, in Zurich already is this with 12 school years the case.
The first two of the four years of the pro High School are not yet divided into emphasis or directions, but however the last two:
- a direction justified for example to the transition to the profiles G, L, S, I, M and Z and other language profiles - with latin - and Greek instruction
- another direction leads into the profiles A, B, W, M and Z - with more mathematics instruction
- again another into the profiles Z and M as well as new languages such as S, I or Russian
starting from 2004 (new Maturreglement MAR) are offered the following training of profiles (emphasis subject) at the High School. They lead in each case to a specialized Matura examination. Not each High School offers all profiles. In some cantons, like for example in the canton Aargau, becomes the profile also in accent subject (1. and 2. Year), as well as emphasis subject (3. and 4. Year) partitions. The choice of the emphasis subject hardly depends on the choice of the accent subject. The accent subject does not count as Maturafach.

in the last to two years (dependent on the canton) before the Maturprüfungen takes place instruction additionally in a so-called auxiliary subject. This subject is freely selectable (selection, for example psychology or philosophy spreads) and it counts the profile-determining subject for the Maturerfolg as much as German, French, mathematics both and (for example with L latin).
In order to become certified the Maturaprüfung, writing of a Maturaarbeit is necessary in most cantons. It enclosure usually at least 20 sides and it must be benotet - like also the verbal presentation of the “research results” - at least as sufficient. In most cantons one can repeat it, however under a larger time pressure - there parallel to it the Maturvorbereitung runs off.
The Maturaprüfung covers the training off of the previous two school years in all rule. Are examined with each profile German, French and mathematics as well as grant-moderately the most strongly weighted subject of the selected profile in four-hour in each case written examinations. In addition short verbal examinations come into German, French (in each case literature), mathematics, that second-strongest weighted technical of the profile and to it the so-called emphasis subject and the auxiliary subject.
For test success the average value of the notes of the last two terms and the average value of the written and the verbal examination count in each subject. From these two average values (experience note and test note) again the Maturnote is formed. In other subjects such as history or Geografie only the experience notes count. Finally each candidate receives nine Maturnoten. From these at the most three may be insufficient, and insufficient Maturnoten must be compensated doubly (3,5 also times 5 or two times 4,5 becomes balanced).
At some canton schools also training courses are offered, which do not lead to a Matura, as for example the specialized middle school (FMS), which was mentioned to 2005 diploma middle school. Beside the FMS is there at many places also the restaurant middle school (WMS). Therefore one cannot call the Kantonsschuelen usually also pure High Schools.
