Karantanien
Karantanien was around 600 n.Chr. formed principality with center in the area of the today's Kärnten. Capital was probably Karnburg at the tariff field. It covered also large parts of the areas of the today's Osttirol and the Steiermark, further the salt citizen Lungau and the Ennspongau, as well as parts southern upper and Lower Austria. Whether areas to the principality of the Karantanien belonged to today's Slovenia, is disputed. In the few existing written historical sources becomes rather between the likewise to a large extent slawisch settled Carniola, which later Krain, and Karantanien differentiated.
The Oberschicht Alpenslawen and a time formed long probably also for Awaren, the remaining population consisted of romanisierten Celt (Noriker) and tightened Romans . In the course 8. Century turned out Karantanien gradually under Bavarian - Frankish influence and lost in the consequence gradually its Selbständgkeit.
The borders of the Karantanien (Kärnten), belonging under the rule of the Karolinger and their successors (825 - 976) to Bavaria, and also the later duchy Kärnten (starting from 976) went occasionally beyond the borders of the old principality.
