Karl I. (Neapel)
Karl I. of Anjou (* March 1226; † 7. January 1285 in Foggia) was a younger brother of the French king Ludwig IX., the holy one (Kapetinger).
life
he was the fifth son king of Ludwig VIII. by France and Blankas von Kastilien. It became of Ludwig IX. appointed the duke by Anjou and its sister-in-law Beatrix of Provence married, whereby Provence belonging to the holy Roman realm fell to it and was extracted from the sphere of influence of the emperor to a large extent.
In the year 1265 Pope Klemens IV. spoke. Karl von Anjou the Kingdom of Sicily as Lehen too, so that this conquers it of pilotfar from. In the year 1266 it defeated Manfred of Sicilies, the uncle of the last Stauferkönigs Konradin and son Friedrichs II. in the battle with Benevent, the army of the last Staufers Konradin was destroying struck 1268 with the battle with Tagliacozzo, executed Konradin thereafter publicly in Neapel.
1267 expanded Karl the expansion of its realm also since areas beyond the Adria and the Ioni sea. First it conquered Korfu and parts of the epirotischen mainland. 1271 fell Durrës into its hand.
Karl exercised a cruel rule in the Kingdom of Sicily. 1282 he was driven out due to a rising of the people (Sicilian Vesper ) from Sicilies; the Kingdom of Sicily fell with Peter von Aragon to a Schwiegerenkel Friedrichs II.
The southern Apenninenhalbinsel could Karl by the renewal of the Kingdom of Neapel against it hold himself. As advisors of his brother Ludwig IXTH, like also its nephew Philipp III. it was considered temporarily as a most powerful man of Europe and stood as a candidate in the year 1273 to the king choice in the holy Roman realm. Instead of its informed itself the cure princes however from own interest of power on the allegedly weak counts Rudolf von Habsburg.
Due to the Pope loyalty of the neapolitanischen Anjous could be established in the year 1308 with Karl Robert von Anjou a great-grandchild of Karl as a Hungarian king in the follow-up of the Arpadendynastie.
