history

early period

Roman tower foundation at the cathedral Muenster

already end 2. Century v. Chr. the Celts , probably from the trunk of the Helvetier , settled within the range of the today'sNiederburg. Konstanz was at the later Roman time probably a smaller border attachment with a stone Ummauerung, whose traces were excavated in recent time, (underground) the inspection possible will shortly be (conditions: February 2006).

Konstanz is after the Roman emperor FlaviusValerius Constantius Chlorus (305/306) had designated, the victories over the Helvetier and Alemannen had achieved. First delivered mention as Constantia in the year 525 in the travel guide of the Ostgoten Anarid.

the Middle Ages

supposed around 585 pulled the bishop from thatin the people migration time somewhat jerky Vindonissa (today Windisch) into more protected lying Konstanz over and became city gentlemen.

Konstanz were because of the way of Germany over the Bündner of alpine passports to Italy, so thatit from ever more the blossoming remote trade in the Middle Ages profited. In the consequence the city was extended several times toward the south, and also the port was shifted several times with. Those increasingly autonomous citizen of the city fought for 1196 and 1213 thoseIndependence from past city gentlemen, the bishop, and finally received the status of a free city.

On the high point of its economic and political power the city at the port established in the year 1388 a “department store” as Warenlager and - to envelope center, the today's council building. By the development of the God hard passport the commercial stream in the future shifted increasingly on the route over Zurich - Basel, so that the development of the city in the later Middle Ages stagnated. Therefore the gothical built volumes of the city remained oflater transformation far going spares. Most important handels and export property was raw, bleached canvas, which admits was under the name Konstanzer canvas far away (tela di Costanza).

From 1414 to 1418 the council of Konstanz took place . The council building, in thatonly the Konklave of the Papal election took place, stands today still on the Bodensee bank, directly beside the Konstanzer port and station. The actual meeting room was the bishop cathedral, today's Münster. The choice of Martin V. at the 11. November 1417 was the only onePapal election north the alps.

To 6. July 1415 was burned on the occasion of the council the Czech Reformator January Hus as Ketzer, its ash was strewn into the Rhine. Gedenkstein at the assumed medieval arranging place (in today the road designated thereafter“To the Hussenstein”), a museum in the Hussenstrasse designated after Hus, as well as the “January Hus house” (student hostel) remind of it.

Konstanz would have itself in 15. Century gladly the confederation attached, which however the land places of today's Switzerland did not permit, because them a predominance thatCities feared. In the consequence Konstanz followed with a heavy heart the Swabian federation . If Konstanz would have become a Swiss federal city at that time, then it would be probably today in place of woman field capital of the Thurgaus, their natural southern hinterland. Strange consequence of itis the unique fact that the Gemarkung is to a small part on Swiss territory, which was contractually specified last in the year 1831.

modern times

1527 were reformed Konstanz, and joined in the consequence the schmalkaldischen federation. After the defeat in the schmalkaldischen war Konstanz 1548 lost the status as free city and into habsburgische front Austria was integrated and in the course of the Gegenreformation rekatholisiert. The city served the having citizens as bulwark against a further expansion of the confederationnorthward. For strengthening catholic consciousness with a papal one bull was created 1604 approximately resistances in the city a Jesuitenkolleg, as High School.

In the dreissigjährigen war Konstanz was besieged of Sweden 1633, but the town center was not taken.

Inthe future continued to sink meaning and number of inhabitants of the city slowly.

Since without a black-out of the linksrheinischen part of the city one did at night, bomber pilots could the Konstanzer part not from the Kreuzlinger part differentiate and from fear of diplomatic entangling from a bombardment “obviously” one refrained. To assume it is however rather that Konstanz remained spared, because the city in the wehrmachtlichen structure no special meaning awardedbecame (geographical location) and thus an allied bombardment without use would have been. Cities such as Friedrichshafen (industry) or even the Swiss work living (envelope station) were met and in the consequence as “mistakes” rated). Also the income 1945 by French troops took place quasiwithout only one shot.

After that 2. World war belonged to Konstanz to the country (south) bathing, which was formed by the French military administration.
