Konstanz was formerly seat of the bishop of the largest diocese of the Roman-catholic church beyond thatAlps. The diocese Konstanz was probably created 585 by transfer by Vindonissa (Windisch) and 1821 of Pope Pius VII. dissolved, since it was one much liberals and enlightened Diözese. Nevertheless far parts of the diocese Konstanz remained decaying; todayform they still for heartland of the oldcatholic and Christian-catholic church.
Konstanz is place of birth of Ferdinand count von Zeppelin, the pioneer that airship - construction. Its family possessed itself at that time the former Dominikanerkloster, in that today the island hotelfinds.
The old part of town of Konstanz is better received than in most other cities of Germany, because it was damaged neither in the dreissigjährigen war nor in the Second World War. The oldest part, called Niederburg, extends between Münster andthe Rhine.
The Konschtanzer, like it calls itself (according to the correct discussion of the place name), is proud on its city, its university and the special situation of the city.
The station of Konstanz is the terminator point of the Schwarzwald railway and hasa direct connection into the Eisenbahnnetz of Switzerland. The city belongs to the traffic group preserving outer Bodensee .
Konstanz is at the Bodensee, because of the discharge of the Rhine from the upper sea-part directly at the border to Switzerland. Swiss neighbour city Kreuzlingen with Konstanz grew together, so that the state border runs in the middle between individual houses through. The old part of town of Konstanz is on the left (southern) Rhine side, thosenewer quarters on the right (northern) on the peninsula Bodanrück between the Untersee and the Überlinger lake. The Konstanzer old part of town is the only area of the Federal Republic of Germany, which south the high Rhine, on which “Swiss” side lies.
The dye Konstanz Kreuzlingencover 110,531 inhabitants (2000). Many Konstanzer have their acquisition in Swiss neighbour city or in its environment. Turned around the Kreuzlinger procures its daily need frequently in Konstanz. Kreuzlingen and Konstanz co-operate with some causes, so for example with the sea-eight-celebrationand with the common building of the ice-skating hall. Likewise there are a partial common bus traffic and common supply installations (electricity mains, gas supply, waste water net).
The city has 34 km Uferlinie and covers 1.31 km ² water surface. Deepest point is the sea-mirror with 395 m and. NN(Central water level), the highest point with 570 m and. NN lies with raw houses the yard in Dettingen.
neighbour municipalities, thus directly to the city of Konstanz bordering municipalities, are the island municipality Reichenau and all brook in the district Konstanz as well as Kreuzlingen, Tägerwilen and God love in the canton Thurgau (Switzerland).
the city of Konstanz is divided into 15 quarters. It partly concerns formerly independent municipalities, which were integrated after Konstanz, on the other hand also around quarters, of themDesignations designated themselves in the course of the land development to have resulted in or after a special point of reference.
the quarters Dettingen, DIN gel village and Litzelstetten are at the same time localities in the sense of the Gemeindeordnung of Baden-Wuerttemberg with one locality advice ( see section local council) and a local administration each.
To some quarters partial further populated areas or living places with own name, so for instance to Burghof, belong Dobel, Mühlhalden, barrier living and brick yard to Dettingen, flow horn to DIN gel village or pc. Katharina to Litzelstetten.
In addition the Gemarkung Tägermoos belongs, however on thatTerritory of Switzerland lies, to Konstanz.
Konstanz is proven after the land development plan for Baden-Wuerttemberg as upper center. This takes over the tasks of the central range for the municipalities all brook and Reichenau also. Beyond that it gives to entwinementsthe canton Thurgau in Switzerland.
already end 2. Century v. Chr. the Celts , probably from the trunk of the Helvetier , settled within the range of the today'sNiederburg. Konstanz was at the later Roman time probably a smaller border attachment with a stone Ummauerung, whose traces were excavated in recent time, (underground) the inspection possible will shortly be (conditions: February 2006).
Konstanz is after the Roman emperor FlaviusValerius Constantius Chlorus (305/306) had designated, the victories over the Helvetier and Alemannen had achieved. First delivered mention as Constantia in the year 525 in the travel guide of the Ostgoten Anarid.
the Middle Ages
Konstanz were because of the way of Germany over the Bündner of alpine passports to Italy, so thatit from ever more the blossoming remote trade in the Middle Ages profited. In the consequence the city was extended several times toward the south, and also the port was shifted several times with. Those increasingly autonomous citizen of the city fought for 1196 and 1213 thoseIndependence from past city gentlemen, the bishop, and finally received the status of a free city.
On the high point of its economic and political power the city at the port established in the year 1388 a “department store” as Warenlager and - to envelope center, the today's council building. By the development of the God hard passport the commercial stream in the future shifted increasingly on the route over Zurich - Basel, so that the development of the city in the later Middle Ages stagnated. Therefore the gothical built volumes of the city remained oflater transformation far going spares. Most important handels and export property was raw, bleached canvas, which admits was under the name Konstanzer canvas far away (tela di Costanza).
From 1414 to 1418 the council of Konstanz took place . The council building, in thatonly the Konklave of the Papal election took place, stands today still on the Bodensee bank, directly beside the Konstanzer port and station. The actual meeting room was the bishop cathedral, today's Münster. The choice of Martin V. at the 11. November 1417 was the only onePapal election north the alps.
To 6. July 1415 was burned on the occasion of the council the Czech Reformator January Hus as Ketzer, its ash was strewn into the Rhine. Gedenkstein at the assumed medieval arranging place (in today the road designated thereafter“To the Hussenstein”), a museum in the Hussenstrasse designated after Hus, as well as the “January Hus house” (student hostel) remind of it.
Konstanz would have itself in 15. Century gladly the confederation attached, which however the land places of today's Switzerland did not permit, because them a predominance thatCities feared. In the consequence Konstanz followed with a heavy heart the Swabian federation . If Konstanz would have become a Swiss federal city at that time, then it would be probably today in place of woman field capital of the Thurgaus, their natural southern hinterland. Strange consequence of itis the unique fact that the Gemarkung is to a small part on Swiss territory, which was contractually specified last in the year 1831.
1527 were reformed Konstanz, and joined in the consequence the schmalkaldischen federation. After the defeat in the schmalkaldischen war Konstanz 1548 lost the status as free city and into habsburgische front Austria was integrated and in the course of the Gegenreformation rekatholisiert. The city served the having citizens as bulwark against a further expansion of the confederationnorthward. For strengthening catholic consciousness with a papal one bull was created 1604 approximately resistances in the city a Jesuitenkolleg, as High School.
Inthe future continued to sink meaning and number of inhabitants of the city slowly.
In the March revolution of Baden started the Heckerzug with moderate resonance ofKonstanz out. Is to 12. April 1848 also the German republic proclaimed its, which is not mentioned however by all three in Konstanz residents newspapers, which reported on the appropriate speech.
1863 became Konstanz to the original route Mannheim - Basel - Konstanz of the state railways of Baden attached. This released - announced freedom of trade together with the 1862 in bathing - an economic upswing, the population grew strongly and one tore the medieval Stadtmauer to a large extent off. With the rubble becamethe railway embankment and the city park - city garden mentioned - to the lake filled up.
in the First World War was partitioned the external border of the German Reich to Switzerland, so that the still lively relations of the city with theirtraditional hinterland Thurgau were strongly limited. The upswing since the period of promoterism was terminated thereby.
1935 became Konstanz urban area in the sense of the German Gemeindeordnung and four years later (1939) a circle-free city, by being separated from the district Konstanz. The city remained however seat of the district administration of the district Konstanz.
In the Second World War Konstanz remained differently than other cities at the Bodensee exempted from the allied bomber attacks. Since without a black-out of the linksrheinischen part of the city one did at night, bomber pilots could the Konstanzer part not from the Kreuzlinger part differentiate and from fear of diplomatic entangling from a bombardment “obviously” one refrained. To assume it is however rather that Konstanz remained spared, because the city in the wehrmachtlichen structure no special meaning awardedbecame (geographical location) and thus an allied bombardment without use would have been. Cities such as Friedrichshafen (industry) or even the Swiss work living (envelope station) were met and in the consequence as “mistakes” rated). Also the income 1945 by French troops took place quasiwithout only one shot.
After that 2. World war belonged to Konstanz to the country (south) bathing, which was formed by the French military administration. In the year 1952 Konstanz became by the combination of bathing, Württemberg and Hohenzollern a city in the new Land of the Federal Republic Baden-Wuerttemberg.
