During the consultation of the general conditions in Versailles the king arranged Ludwig XVI. as attempt of disciplining a meeting separated according to conditions on. The delegates of the third conditions explained themselves to 17. Juni zur Nationalversammlung, zur Vertretung der gesamten Nation. Am 9. Juli erklärte sich die Nationalversammlung für verfassunggebend, man spricht daher von der Konstituante.

Im Zuge der Französischen Revolution übernahm die Konstituante vom König gesetzgebende und Regierungsgewalt. Sie beendete ihre Tätigkeit mit der Vereidigung des Königs auf die von ihr verabschiedete Verfassung des 3. September 1791.
