Lajos Portisch (* 4. April 1937 in Zalaegerszeg) is a Hungarian chess player.

Between 1958 and 1981 he won nine times the Hungarian championship. Since 1961 he is large master. From 1956 to 2002 it played in the Hungarian national team, which it led with the chess Olympiad 1978 in Buenos Aires to gold medal. Between 1965 and 1989 he qualified seven times for the candidate tournament and arrived themselves there 1977 and 1980 in the semi-final.

1980 it achieved its best historical Elo number of 2757. It is considered as outstanding position players and also as one of the most industrious large masters. According to own statement busy it itself over many years daily eight hours with chess. Together with Balázs Sárközy it published 1986 a book with the title of “600 final games “(ISBN 3-87144-810-9).
