Ludwig south north course
the Ludwig south north course was built of the royally Bavarian state railway as the first state railway distance between 1843 and 1854 and opened in sections. It received its names after king Ludwig I. (Bavaria), which occurred more at the beginning of for its Main Danube channel than for railways. The distance leads from Lindau across Kempten, Augsburg, Nuremberg, Bamberg after yard. There connection exists to the Saxonian-Bavarian railway society.

history
after the experiment with the building of the private Munich Augsburger railway company and the opening of their distance to 4. October 1840 had been successful, was based in many places Bayerns railway committee for the building of private railroad lines. The Bavarian state decided however to concern the building of further railroad lines than national task. To 14. It closed January 1841 with the Kingdom of Saxonia and the duchy Saxonia old person castle a contract for the building of a railroad line from Leipzig to Nuremberg with border crossing with yard and the obligation for all partners to place this distance within 6 years completely. in Saxonia began still 1841 the private Saxonian-Bavarian railway Compagnie, in which the two Saxonian states with 25% were involved, with the building. In Bavaria one had created 1841 the royal commission of building of railways to Nuremberg and had begun 1842 with the purchase of land. The building of the distance one tackled 1843. Reason for this late commencement of construction was the search for a distance with not for large upward gradients and simultaneous connection as much as possible Bavarian places. Thus one had to accept the inclined level at the Fichtelgebirge apart from some detours also with new market we mountain with an average upward gradient of 23 ‰.
The northern part of the Ludwig south north course in a length of 203 kilometers in five stages was opened:

the ceremony for the opening of the first section already found in Nuremberg to 25. August 1848, the birthday of the king, instead of. One had been able to keep neither in Bavaria nor in Saxonia the agreed upon construction period of 6 years. In Saxonia delays resulted particularly because of the large structures over elster and Göltzschtal, so that the distance was passable there only 1851 continuous. In attaining, where the railroad line runs parallel to the Ludwig Main Danube channel, it drives through a short tunnel. In Bamberg the Ludwig west course over peppering castle attached after Aschaffenburg starting from 1852. In yard the distance ended until 1880 in a head station.
The south north course concerned at the beginning of Fürth in the east. After the critical point in Doos it crossed the Ludwig course and ran northward over * Poppenreuth, neuron yard and Ronhof to the critical point largecreate-laughs. 1865 were opened the only mountain peppering citizen course, which was led to Doos together with the south north course. This distance crossed Fürth quite central. 1876 were decided the building “ford ago of the elbow”. The Ludwig south north course branched west the filter elbow bridge over the Rednitz in a far elbow toward the north over Unterfarrnbach, a bridge over the Regnitz, the station Vach in barns as well as a bridge over the Ludwig channel with harsh old yard after largecreate-laughs on the original route.
central section Augsburg Nuremberg
in the central section one had likewise begun 1843 with the building. The two bridges over Lech and Danube in Augsburg and Donauwörth restrained however a brisk development. The connection of this state railway distance with the state capital became at the 1. June 1846 Munich Augsburger railway company puts under state control. To their shareholders the Bavarian state paid a compensation of 4.4 million guldens.

April 1849 the detour over Nördlingen, because a connection was expected here to the württembergische traction network.
south section Augsburg Lindau
still during the building of the south section, today in its last part also general outer course (KBS 970) mentioned, began in Augsburg the work to the Bavarian Maximiliansbahn toward Ulm. Their first stage to Dinkelscherben could do already to 26. September 1853 to be opened. In Kempten one led the distance on a high double-railed timber bridge across the Iller and let her in a head station before the city end. Only 1906 were replaced the timber bridge by a concrete bridge. Continued to develop to only 7 km toward Immenstadt over the Waltenhofer Tobel further 53 m a long timber bridge, which only 1900 was replaced by a steel bridge. Starting from Aeschach the distance on the sea-dam leads after Lindau.

the entire distance from yard to Lindau with a length from 566 kilometers was at the 1. March 1854 , thus posed 11 years after commencement of construction, a large achievement by the involved ones with the means at that time the available. The distance is today predominantly double-railed developed.

south section
on the south section is the distance from book RST to Lindau (KBS 970) an important connection to Vorarlberg and Switzerland. The courses are driven into Diesel traction. Development plans exist. With the usually weather-related blockages of the Arlbergstrecke the courses of the Austrian Federal Railroads are rerouted after Vorarlberg over this distance.
central section
in the central section is used the south north course by the building of the abbreviation Donauwörth Treuchtlingen - Pleinfeld no longer completely than main course. The sections Augsburg Donauwörth and Pleinfeld Nuremberg were already spanned 1935 with the contact wire. The distance piece of Donauwörth over Gunzenhausen to Pleinfeld remained single-railed. The part of Nördlingen Gunzenhausen was shut down 1985 for the person and goods traffic and is today museum course. One selected the detour over Nördlingen, because a connection was expected here to the württembergische traction network.
north section
in the north section branches the electrified distance today in Hochstadt Marktzeuln toward hall field - Jena . The south north course from high city to yard and to Saxonia is continued to operate in Diesel traction.
The Urtrasse of the south north course lain left open of east of Fürth there are some Relikte:
- Dams to the west of largecreate-laugh
- cuts east stone oh, now a Weiherkette in the trade area Schmalau,
- the star way in Ronhof and a Wirtschaftsweg in Poppenreuth
- the stone elbow bridge with Doos at the Pegnitz, which as road bridge was used (Dooser road) and 1963 in favor of the new cure garden bridge were broken off.
A planned turning of the rapid-transit railway after Forchheim over the trade area Schmalau would return the course on a part of the old route.
