Maestrale class

the Maestrale class is a frigate class of the Italian navy. The class consists of eight at the beginning of the 1980er years with Fincantieri in Genova and La Spezia built ships:

  • Maestrale (F 570) (type ship)
  • Grecale (F 571)
  • Libeccio (F 572)
  • Scirocco (F 573)
  • Aliseo (F 574)
  • euro (F 575)
  • Espero (F 576)
  • Zeffiro (F 577)

these ships form still the backbone of the Italian fleet. They are to be replaced starting from 2010 gradually by French-Italian FREMM frigates.

As major task of the “Maestrale class” originally the fight against submarines was intended. The ships of this class had however from the outset also anti-ship missiles, air defense rockets and onboard helicopters. This employment flexibility disbursed itself after the end of the cold war.
