Majjhima Nikaya

the Majjhima Nikaya („collection of the centrallong papers “, contraction MN, also middle collection) is second of the five Nikayas („collections “), of which the Suttapitaka consists. The name refers to the relative length of the contained Sutten (training speeches), which are centrallong compared with those the “longer collection ” Digha Nikaya and the “shorter collection ” Khuddaka Nikaya usually.

The only complete translation of the Pali - original text into German comes still from Karl Eugen Neumann and developed between 1896 and 1902. This translation is often regarded today as incorrect and antiquated. On suggestion of Ayya Khema developed in recent time a complete re-translation of Kay Zumwinkel. This translation strives for a language more up-to-date and a more exact transmission of the conceptualnesses, relies however mainly on an unfinished translation of the Pali text in English of Bhikku Bodhi.

The middle collection contains altogether 152 Sutten, those in three “groups of fifties” (Pannasa) to ever 50 and/or. once 52 Sutten divided are, itself again in chapters with in each case ten and/or. once - in the next to last chapter - with twelve Sutten partition.

The Sutten forms no connection developing one on the other, but stands independently next to each other. In the middle collection the complete teachings Buddhas are already contained in the core.
