The city Margate is because of the northern coastal line of the Isle OF Thanet between Broadstairs and Herne Bay, west the Isle OF Sheppey. The city with in the meantime approximately 57,000 inhabitants was created around the year 1254 first with the name Meregate and already renamed around 1293 in Margate.
Like the entire region also Margate lives favoured by the tourism, predominantly by the relative proximity to London. Beside individual travelers in particular English into the Weihnachtsferien and to the turn of the year () bus routes come to Margate, beyond that are it also a goal of pupil language journeys. Like that also the townscape is coined/shaped direct from a promenade, a tideabhängigen small port with a mole, a sand beach below the local centre and B&B - hotels and pensions. Eastward Margate changes directly into the local part Cliftonville .
In and the 30's 20's important chess championships took place in Margate, as also in other British seaside resorts.
